  • AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Neolithic Sites in the Kashmir Valley, India

Open Access•Abdul Adil Paray, Manoj Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

This study presents accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates from three endangered Neolithic sites in the Kashmir Valley—Gufkral (Extension), Hariparigam and Qasim Bagh. As these sites are threatened by ongoing anthropogenic activities and are not suitable for large‐scale excavation, samples were collected from exposed stratigraphic sections using a minimally invasive approach. Twenty samples, including charcoal, bone, ash and charre…

  • Radiocarbon based fossil fuel CO 2 observations in megacity Delhi

Open Access•Rajveer Sharma, Ravi Kumar Kunchala et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

This study employs radiocarbon measurements (Δ 14 C) to detect fossil fuel CO 2 (CO 2ff ) in the megacity Delhi from 2018 to 2022, offering unique insights into fossil fuel emissions. Our measurements reveal varying Δ 14 C values ranging from −56.2‰ to 7.5‰ and CO 2ff values ranging from 0.3 ppm to 25.2 ppm. We observed a distinct seasonality in Δ 14 C and CO 2ff , with higher CO 2ff (lower Δ 14 C) values during winter and post-monsoon seasons an…

  • Quantification of excess carbon-14 specific activity in soil and sediments in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant by batch combustion and liquid scintillation counting method

Open Access•Arya Krishnan K, Raj Bharath et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

The application of a tube combustion system (pyrolyzer) for the batch combustion of low carbon content environmental matrices, such as soil and sediment, for determining 14 C specific activity is examined. The samples were combusted at 600°C, and the CO 2 species produced were trapped in 3N NaOH, precipitated as BaCO 3 by adding BaCl 2 , and subjected to acid-hydrolysis to transfer the CO 2 species to the absorber-scintillator mixture for liquid …

In this study, we aim to reconstruct southern India's intrinsic environmental changes over the past 1500 years from 3330 to 1830 cal BP by investigating the sedimentation and weathering dynamics in Lake Shantisagara, one of Karnataka's largest lakes. Four distinct climatic phases were delineated based on sedimentological, geochemical, and End Member Modelling Analysis (EMMA) results. Phase 1 (3330-3100 cal BP) is a short-term low rainfall zone ch…

  • Spatial Distribution of Fossil Fuel Co 2 in Megacity Delhi Determined Using Radiocarbon Measurements in Peepal ( Ficus Religiosa ) Tree Leaves

Open Access•Rajveer Sharma, Ravi Kumar Kunchala et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Referencias: 44

The quantification of fossil-fuel derived carbon dioxide (CO 2ff ) emissions is critical for regional carbon budgets. Radiocarbon ( 14 C) is an effective tool to estimate the contribution of CO 2ff to the total atmospheric CO 2 . In the present study, we have determined the spatial distribution of fossil fuel derived CO 2 across Delhi using 14 C measurements in Peepal tree leaves from April 2016 to March 2017 at city scale. Our analysis results s…
