Early opportunities and fourth-grade success
To ensure all children can be successful in school and beyond, states have increasingly supported and expanded pre-kindergarten (pre-k) programs aimed and improving student outcomes and reducing disparities. While research has shown generally positive short-term outcomes for specific programs, state design and support for pre-k programs varies widely across the US, making cross-state comparisons difficult. Policy reformer’s dream or nightmare
In this Forum we suggest that a growing intensity of contradictory public and private interests in education is a persistent force in education development stemming from the increasing centrality o
The Expansion of the Child’s Garden
The emergence and transformation of kindergarten in the United States is the quintessential example of the irrepressibility of schooling expansion, the ever-greater institutionalization of education in children’s lives, and the rise in formal education’s emphasis on cognitive skills among young children. Is there a home advantage in school readiness for young children? Trends in parent engagement in cognitive activities with young children, 1991–2001
The desire to understand the home advantage has spurred a large body of research describing the contribution of differences in family background and parenting styles to school readiness and the achievement gap. Using the National Household Education Survey at two time points provides a fuller picture of the trends in parenting and cognitive activities with young children before the onset of formal schooling. Gender Stratification in the Science Pipeline
This study uses a 'science pipeline' model and cross-national data to examine women's participation in science education and occupations in seven countries. Gender stratification in later science education and in science occupations is found in every country examined. Young women's participation in science education decreases with each stage in the science pipeline, but there is considerable cross-national variation in the extent of gender strati…
Solving the Math Problem
Assessments of national differences in middle-grades mathematics have shown that Japanese students score significantly higher on achievement exams than American students. The debate over what causes this has generated many hypotheses that have not fared well in empirical tests. Because of this we examine another set of causal factors. It is hypothesized that classroom mathematics achievement is produced differently in each system. It is also hypo…
