Is there a pension penalty for late-career family caregiving in Germany? The role of pension care credits and employment career
Unpaid care for ill, disabled, or frail older family members (hereafter ‘family care’) is most common in late career. Because caregiving can be difficult to reconcile with paid work, it may reduce pension contribution records and later-life financial well-being. Many European countries therefore provide pension care credits, yet eligibility is selective and many caregivers remain uncredited. Against this background, we examine how late-career pen…
The retirement impact on housing cost burden
Existing research on housing cost burden focuses on its evolution over time. Few empirical studies, meanwhile, investigate changes in housing cost burden as a function of age. Literature is also scarce on how people’s housing cost burden is affected by the act of retiring. In order to fill this research gap, we examine how the burden of housing costs tends to change after retirement and how the impact of retirement on housing cost burden differs …
Mobility restriction and barrier-reduced housing among people aged 65 or older in Germany
Introduction: Older people spend a lot of time at home and in the area near where they live. Housing conditions ensure their ability to participate in social life, especially when they suffer from mobility restrictions. Barrier-free access to the residence and to rooms within the residence is a key condition for their everyday mobility. As a result, this is what we define as minimal criteria for barrier-reduced residences. This article examines t…
Gender differences in the determinants of mature entrepreneurship? The case of Germany
Mature female entrepreneurs represent a non-traditional model of self-employed workers in both ways: in terms of gender and age. The transition into self-employment for women aged 45 years and older represents a topic of aging research that still tends to be overlooked. Previous studies found ambivalent results for the issue regarding motives and entrepreneurial pathways between former employmen or unemployment-and starting one's own business and…

Is Part-Time Employment after Childbirth a Stepping-Stone into Full-Time Work? A Cohort Study for East and West Germany
Does part-time work support first-time mothers’ employment by providing a stepping-stone into full-time work in Germany? Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel from 1984–2012, this study compares three different age cohorts of first-time East and West German mothers to investigate whether there has been any convergence between East and West Germany in the way women use part-time employment. Results show that mothers in West Germany in al…
A stalled revolution? What can we learn from women’s drop-out to part-time jobs
Separate paths, same direction? De-standardization of male employment biographies in East and West Germany
Until the mid-1980s, labour markets in Germany were characterized by a high level of employment stability. Employment biographies of men were dominated by full-time employment in both East and West Germany and were hence quite similar in this respect, despite the two regions' enormously different institutional settings. Since that time however, important changes have occurred. Labour markets have become more flexible, as have employment biographi…
Creating Employment or Keeping Them Busy? An Evaluation of Training Programs for Older Workers in Germany
The authors analyze the effect of participation in short-term training measures on older German recipients of means-tested unemployment benefits. Their analysis uses administrative data of the German Federal Employment Agency, and they estimate the effects of participating in two types of short-term training--classroom and in-firm training--on different outcomes of the participants. Results show that classroom training is not effective in making …

Changing employment patterns of women in Germany
Why Are Women Delaying Motherhood in Germany
German fertility trends show that the average age at which women have their first child has increased in recent decades. Moreover, researchers have argued that delayed maternity is an important factor in reduced fertility. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), this paper contributes to the debate about maternity timing and reduced fertility in Germany by analyzing some of the factors determining the delay of motherhood. The resu…
Are Fixed-Term Jobs Bad for Your Health
In this paper we analyse the health effects of fixed-term contract status for men and women in West-Germany and Spain using panel data. This paper asks whether changes in the employment relationship, as a result of the liberalisation of employment law, have altered the positive health effects associated with employment (Jahoda 1982; Goldsmith et al. 1996). Using information on switches between unemployment and employment by contract type we analy…
