  • War and Terrorism

Robin May Schott•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Feminist…•2021

This chapter offers an account of central issues in feminist philosophical work on war and terrorism. Violence and oppression have been core feminist issues, both historically and substantively. Feminists have cleared two distinctive but parallel paths for reflections on violence. One path focuses on embodiment and norms and analyzes violence in terms of gender and sexuality. A second path engages with questions of the political frames of violenc…

  • Sexual Violence

Open Access•Robin May Schott•CHAPTER•Dem Erleben Auf der Spur•2016

Despite the continuing global epidemic of sexual violence in the lives of women and girls, and in the lives of many boys and men as well, sexual violence is much less a part of a contemporary feminist theoretical agenda than it was forty years ago. Here I focus on two key concepts that operate in this field of debate: the concept of the victim and the concept of vulnerability. In the debates surrounding these terms, one can detect a movement of n…

  • What is the sex doing in the genocide?’ A feminist philosophical response

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•European Journal of Women s Studies•2015•Referencias: 1

This article reviews the literature on Holocaust and genocide studies to consider the question, ‘what is the sex doing in the genocide?’ Of the three answers usually given: (1) sexual violence is like other forms of genocidal violence, (2) sexual violence is a coordinate in genocide and (3) sexual violence is integral to genocidal violence, the author argues for the third position, but takes issue with Catharine MacKinnon’s claim that sexual viol…

  • Making Friends with the Beast?' Reflections on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Kvinder Køn & Forskning•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

UN Res. 1325 is a revolutionarytransformation of rhetoricregarding issues of women, peace, and security. In the last dozen years, there has been a proliferation ofdebates about its successes and itsfailures. Should its limitations beunderstood as failures in implementation?Or should the concepts ofwomen, gender, and violence whichframe the resolution be criticallychallenged

  • War rape, natality and genocide

Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2011•Citada por: 2

Feminist philosophy can make an important contribution to the field of genocide studies, and issues relating to gender and war are gaining new attention. In this article I trace legal and philosophical analyses of sexual violence against women in war. I analyze the strengths and limitations of the concept of social death—introduced into this field by Claudia Card—for understanding the genocidal features of war rape, and draw on the work of Hannah…

  • Just War and the Problem of Evil

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2008

In this essay, Robin May Schott criticizes leading proponents of just war theory and introduces the notion of justifiable but illegitimate violence. Instead of legitimating some wars as just, it is better to acknowledge that both the situation of war and moral judgments about war are ambiguous. Schott raises the questions: What are alternative narratives of war? And what are alternative narratives to war? Such narratives are necessary for address…

  • The Atrocity Paradigm and the Concept of Forgiveness

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

In this article I discuss Claudia Card's treatment of war rape in relation to her discussion of the victim's moral power of forgiveness. I argue that her analysis of the victim's power to withhold forgiveness overlooks the paradoxical structure of witnessing, which implies that there is an ungraspable dimension of atrocity. In relation to this ungraspable element, the proposal that victims of atrocity have the power to either offer or withhold fo…

Lat ely it has become popular to chime the death knoll of feminism, perhaps to say the final farewell with melancholy, or at least to make sure that its resurrection will make feminism unrecognizable to its adherents. This farewell to feminism appears in both unsurprising and surprising places: In the media one can read men denouncing women's abandonment of feminism in choosing the "fast track" -thankfully, it is added, men have been able to take…

  • Gender and “Postmodern War”

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Hypatia•1996•Citada por: 8

In this essay I argue that war is not “above” gender analyses. I question in particular whether the concept of “postmodern war” is adequate to explain the intersections of gender with ethnicity and nationality, which underlie the sexual violence against women in wartime. The poststructuralist concept of the “fluidity” of the category of gender needs to be modified by an analysis of how “non-fluid” configurations of gender are entrenched in materi…

  • Att återupprätta det kroppsliga - för en feministisk materialism

    Open Access•Robin May Schott•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•1991•Referencias: 1
