This article looks at the lives of four people living in northern England: a refugee, a disabled person, a student and a house hunter. It examines the problems they face, including hostility, poverty, debt, a broken housing market and the wider social trends—particularly inequality—underlying them. It examines which of these issues are currently being addressed by politicians and whether, without a shift in the terms of debate, policies that are …

This article provides an example of the contribution a systems psychodynamic approach can make to action research. Drawing from a case study of a complex inter-organizational project, the authors argue that the concept of 'communicative space' requires consideration of affectivity, and the holding of an emotional space for people to connect symbiotically with each other. High risk infants in the children's court process in Australia
Infant (0–24 months) protection cases pose particular difficulties at court: infants are physically and developmentally vulnerable, frequently there is no ‘track record’ against which parenting performance can be predicted, and the rights of infants and parents often appear to conflict. This article outlines the purpose, definition and usefulness of social work practice research and then describes a training program conducted by a group of social workers in the Australian Association of Social Workers (Victorian Branch) Practice Research Special Interest Group. These workshops offered practitioners the opportunity to explore a research idea with a group of colleagues which acted as a reference group over a period of six months. …
