Simultaneous comparison of the chemical composition and attributable source of PM 2.5 during 2014–2018 in major metropolitan cities in South Korea
Ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is one of the most concerning pollutants, characterized by its diverse chemical composition. Although various studies have revealed PM 2.5 chemical components, there is limited knowledge on how to reduce PM 2.5 concentrations through administrative policies focusing on source management. We compared PM 2.5 compositional characteristics and performed source apportionment using the positive matrix factoriza…
Patterns of Multisystem Service Use and School Dropout Among Seventh-, Eighth-, and Ninth-Grade Students
Youth who receive services from public mental health, child welfare and delinquency, and homeless systems are often exposed to a number of overlapping child, family, school, and community risk factors. Minimal research, however, has focused on the extent to which single- or multiple-system involvement influences school dropout. Relying on an integrated data set, the associations between single- and multiple-system utilization and risk for droppin…
Estimation of parasite infection prevalence of Joseon people by paleoparasitological data updates from the ancient feces of pre-modern Korean mummies
In paleoparasitology, which is the study of ancient parasite species, parasite egg remnants in archaeological samples are examined by microscopic or molecular analysis. The parasitological information thus obtained can inform speculation about the parasite-infection patterns that prevailed in ancient societies. The current analysis of ancient feces removed from Joseon period mummies adds six new paleoparasitological outcomes to the existing pool …
Physical and Psychological Aggression Toward a Child Among Homeless, Doubled-Up, and Other Low-Income Families
This study examines the extent of adverse parenting behaviors among low-income families with children and determines whether housing instability, measured by homelessness and doubling up with relatives or friends due to economic hardship, increases the likelihood of physical and psychological aggression towards a child, after considering the contribution of other relevant characteristics. Using data from 3 waves of the Fragile Families and Child …
Factors Contributing to the Receipt of Housing Assistance by Low-Income Families with Children in Twenty American Cities
The excess demand for housing assistance in the United States is well documented, but little is known about the factors that contribute to a family’s likeliness to receive housing assistance. This study tracks 3,237 low-income families in 20 large US cities over a 9-year study period to see which families would wind up receiving housing assistance. Thirty percent of the families subsequently received either public housing or voucher-based assista…
Homelessness and children's use of mental health services
The patterns and costs of services use among homeless families
This study examines families' use of behavioral health hospitalization and foster care placement before, during, and after shelter use, comparing families based on shelter pattern and type of housing exit. Results show that inpatient and foster care services use drops in the homelessness period, but rebounds after exit, regardless of pattern of shelter use and type of housing exit. Results suggest that shelters supplant use of services, but not o…
Changes in Maternal Health and Health Behaviors as a Function of Homelessness
This longitudinal study examines the influence of homelessness on maternal health and health behaviors. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, it follows 2,631 families from 20 large US cities over 5 years. Over that period, 9.8 percent of the sample reportedly experienced at least one homeless spell and an additional 23.6 percent experienced one or more doubled-up episodes. Estimated rates of disability, depression, and …

Rates and correlates of recurrent psychiatric crisis episodes among children and adolescents in state custody
Predictors of residential placement following a psychiatric crisis episode among children and youth in state custody
This study examined the extent and correlates of entry into residential care among 603 children and youth in state custody who were referred to psychiatric crisis services. Overall, 27% of the sample was placed in residential care within 12 months after their 1st psychiatric crisis screening. Among the children and youth placed in residential care, 51% were so placed within 3 months of their 1st crisis screening, with an additional 22% placed bet…
Placement and Permanency Outcomes for Children in Out-of-Home Care by Prior Inpatient Mental Health Treatment
Objective: This longitudinal study followed 5,978 children in out-of-home care to examine whether placement and permanency outcomes differ between children with and without a history of inpatient mental health treatment. Method: Data were drawn from child welfare and Medicaid records from the state of Illinois. Logistic regression and survival analysis were applied. Results: A history of inpatient mental health treatment preceding out-of-home pla…
Testing a typology of family homelessness based on patterns of public shelter utilization in four U.S. jurisdictions
This study tests a typology of family homelessness based on patterns of public shelter utilization and examines whether family characteristics are associated with those patterns. The results indicate that a substantial majority of homeless families stay in public shelters for relatively brief periods, exit, and do not return. Approximately 20 percent stay for long periods. A small but noteworthy proportion cycles in and out of shelters repeatedly…

Childhood out-of-home placement and dynamics of public shelter utilization among young homeless adults
The Roles of Living Arrangements and Household Resources in Single Mothers' Employment

Data from the National Survey of Families and Households were analyzed through regression models with the hybrid method. The findings show that household resources, including financial, child care, and housework assistance, varied across single mothers' living arrangements, that housework assistance was associated with single m…
Public Shelter Admission among Young Adults with Child Welfare Histories by Type of Service and Type of Exit
This study examines the prevalence and associated factors of New York City public shelter use among young adults with histories of out‐of‐home care or nonplacement preventive services as teenagers. The study finds that 19 percent of former child welfare service users entered public shelters within 10 years of exit from child welfare. Persons with out‐of‐home placement histories are twice as likely to enter public shelters (22 percent) as those wh…
