The Impact of Different Degrees of Feedback on Physical Activity Levels
Assessing levels of physical activity (PA) and providing feedback about these levels might have an effect on participant's PA behavior. This study discusses the effect of different levels of feedback--from minimal to use of a feedback display and coach--on PA over a 4-week intervention period. PA was measured at baseline, during and immediately after the intervention. Participants (n=227) were randomly assigned to a Minimal Intervention Group (MI…
Temporal patterns of physical activity and sedentary behavior in 10–14 year-old children on weekdays
Throughout the day, different aspects of PA and SB go in competition with each other, especially during the time period immediately after school. Detailed information on the temporal patterns of PA and SB of children could help health professionals to develop more effective PA interventions and promotion strategies. By making adaptations to the typical day schedule of children (e.g., through the introduction of extra-curricular PA after school ho…
Change, stability and prediction of gross motor co-ordination in Portuguese children
MC seemed moderately stable from childhood through adolescence and, additionally, inter-individual predictors at adolescence were growth, FMS, physical fitness, physical activity and SES
Evaluation of a real world intervention using professional football players to promote a healthy diet and physical activity in children and adolescents from a lower socio-economic background
The 'Health Scores!' intervention was successful in increasing psychosocial correlates of a healthy diet and PA. The use of professional football players as a credible source for health promotion was appealing to socially vulnerable children and adolescents
Evaluation of a workplace intervention to promote commuter cycling
The results of the dissemination study are promising. The adoption and implementation rates indicate that the 'Bike to Work: cyclists are rewarded' program seems to be a feasible workplace intervention. At the individual level, a higher score of commuter cycling was found among the employees aware of the program. Nevertheless, more evidence regarding long term effectiveness and sustainability of the intervention is needed
Compliance with different physical activity recommendations and its association with socio-demographic characteristics using an objective measure
The prevalence of sufficient physical activity differed greatly depending on the definition used. Women and subjects older than 35 were less likely to meet the guidelines than men and younger subjects and thus are important groups to target in future interventions

Socio-economic and lifestyle factors associated with overweight in Flemish adult men and women
The present study confirms the contention that overweight is a multifactorial problem. Age and TV viewing are positively associated with overweight, while educational level and health related sports are negatively related to overweight in both genders. In men, alcohol consumption and smoking in the past are also among the lifestyle factors associated with overweight. This study also indicates that BMI and WC do not have the same discriminative fu…
Socio-economic status, growth, physical activity and fitness
Considerable variation in somatic growth and physical fitness in association with SES has been demonstrated, but little association was found for physical activity
Sports Participation Among Females From Adolescence To Adulthood
It is widely believed that active participation in sports during youth is an important prerequisite for adult involvement in sports. However, data from reliable longitudinal studies tracking patterns of sports participation from youth into adulthood are scarce. This study addresses the leisure-time sports participation of adult women, 32-41 years of age, from a lifetime sports socialization perspective. Some 20 years after they participated in 19…

Longitudinal principal component analysis of somatic and motor characteristics
Longitudinal principal component analysis was applied to the study of growth patterns of several somatic and motor characteristics. The data are from the “Leuven Growth Study of Belgian Boys,” in which six annual observations were made. Peak growth velocity and age at peak growth velocity for each variable were estimated. The results for height show three components sufficient to provide an adequate representation of the original information. The…
Motor performance during adolescence and age thirty as related to age at peak height velocity
Relationships between motor performance, as measured by various fitness tests, and age at peak height velocity have been studied in a sample of 173 Flemish boys, measured yearly between +/- 13 and +/- 18 years and again as adults at 30 years of age. In addition to correlation studies, comparisons were made between boys with an early, average and late age at peak height velocity. To summarize the successive measurements during adolescence, a longi…
Age at menarche in Flemish girls
The age at menarche in a national sample of 4894 Flemish schoolgirls was surveyed in 1979-1980. The probit estimate of the mean age at menarche was 13.20 +/- 0.02 years (SD = 1.25 years). This estimate falls well within the range of reported ages at menarche for girls in northwestern Europe, but is slightly later than those for French-speaking girls in Belgium and in France. Status quo secular data for the 20th century indicate a decline in estim…
Sociogeographic variation in the physical fitness of a cross‐sectional sample of Flemish girls 13 to 18 years of age
Three aspects of physical fitness-somatic characteristics, motor fitness, and sport participation-of girls from different sociogeographic origins of Belgium were contrasted. The sample consisted of a cross-sectional sample of 4,528 Flemish girls 13 to 18 years of age, who were classified by dwelling area as rural, semi-urban, and urban. Somatic characteristics included 16 anthropometric dimensions, skeletal maturity, and somatotype. Motor fitness…
Secular trends in somatic and motor characteristics of physical education students
This study investigated changes in somatic and motor characteristics of 3,514 physical education students at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) from the academic years 1941–1942 to 1988–1989. To facilitate data handling, the span of 47 years was divided into nine cohorts for anthropometric variables, and 4 cohorts for the motor data which were available only since the 1968–1969 academic year. A total of 21 anthropometric variables (sinc…
Relationships of motor performance of adult men to anthropometry
Relationships between 12 anthropometric characteristics and motor performance, as measured by various fitness tests, were considered in a sample of 165 Flemish adults observed at age 30 years. In addition to a bivariate correlation study, a canonical correlation analysis was carried out. More than 72% of the variance was shared by the first three canonical variables. The first canonical variable can be explained as a general size function. Static…
Stability of Metacarpal II dimensions in boys during adolescence
The stability of radiogrammetrically determined Metacarpal II (M II) bone dimensions was determined in 184 Belgian boys between 13 and 18 years of age. Stability was assessed by Fisher z transformations of Pearson correlations between discrete measurement intervals and by structured covariance analysis incorporating compound, banded, and autoregressive models. Adjacent‐age stability (1‐year measurement interval) was high (0.82 ⩽ r ⩽ 0.97) for all…
Body size, biological maturation, and sport participation related to cortical bone in adolescent girls
The purposes of this study were twofold: (1) to describe the growth of metacarpal bone dimensions in a large sample (n = 819) of Flemish girls, 12–18 years, and (2) to investigate the relationship among cortical bone dimensions, biological maturation, and participation in sports activities. Besides body mass and stature, Tanner‐Whitehouse skeletal age (SA) was estimated and menarcheal status was assessed. Second metacarpal bone dimensions were me…
Maturity-associated variation in peak oxygen uptake in active adolescent boys and girls
Maturity-associated variation in peak O2 uptake was considered in a longitudinal sample of 47 boys and 40 girls who were enrolled in sports schools. The children were followed annually from 11 to 14 years of age. O2 uptake and heart rate were measured during a maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer. For boys, individual velocity curves were used to operationally define maturity groups: early-decreasing velocities from 11 to 14 years, n = 9; a…
