Evaluating an intervention for healthcare professionals to facilitate family-centred conversations when an adult patient has a serious illness
Using the Person-based Approach to plan and develop an intervention for healthcare professionals to facilitate family-centred conversations when an adult patient has a serious illness
It’s like an oak tree growing slowly across a barbed wire fence
Bereavement by suicide is a traumatic and life-changing experience. However, little is known about the lived experiences of people bereaved by suicide themselves, and older people’s voices are notably absent from the current suicide prevention and intervention strategies. This paper seeks to understand the different individual experiences and pathways arising from the suicide research for people in later life who have been bereaved by suicide thr…
It’s a Living Experience”
Bereavement by suicide for people in later life is significantly under-researched. Research on ageing and suicide has yet to address the experiences of those bereaved by suicide and how such a devastating loss affects the ageing experience. Objectives : We explored the substantive issues involved in bereavement by suicide and its impact on later life. Methods : This was a co-produced qualitative study. Peer researchers with lived experience condu…
Young parents’ experiences of pregnancy and parenting during the Covid-19 pandemic
Young parents (aged 16-24 years) in the perinatal period are at an increased risk of poor mental health especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, due to multiple risk factors including social and economic instability. COVID-19 related restrictions had profound implications for the delivery of perinatal care services and other support structures for young parents. Investigating young parents' experiences during the pandemic, including their perceiv…
Pre-loss grief experiences of adults when someone important to them is at end-of-life
Pre-loss grief can be experienced by relatives before impending death; however, limited understanding exists about the impact of pre-loss grief on bereavement. This systematic review aimed to synthesize qualitative research evidence reporting adults' experiences of pre-loss grief within cancer care. Thirteen studies were selected, and three key themes identified. Findings indicate that relatives transitioned through lived experiences during end-s…
Immediate bereavement experiences when a parent of dependent children has died of cancer
When a parent of dependent children dies, families are often unsure if and how children could be part of the immediate bereavement period. Children excluded can be more susceptive to negative outcomes. In-depth interviews explored funeral directors' ( N = 23) experiences of providing a service to families in the immediate bereavement period, when a parent dies from cancer. Findings highlighted funeral directors can have an important role in guidi…
Improving intergroup relations between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland via E‐contact
Northern Ireland is characterised by extensive segregation between its predominantly Catholic and Protestant communities. With the aim of overcoming this segregation, the current study experimentally evaluated the effectiveness of electronic or E‐contact as a novel indirect contact and prejudice‐reduction strategy. Here, Catholic and Protestant participants were not required to meet physically but were involved in a collaborative and goal‐orienta…
Altruism born of suffering among emerging adults in Northern Ireland
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore altruism born of suffering (ABS), a theory that explains how the experience of suffering within one’s own life may result in the motivation to help others, even outgroup members. Design/methodology/approach Participants were 186 emerging adults (63 per cent female, 37 per cent male; 69 per cent Protestant, 41 per cent Catholic; average age =21.3, SD=2.57 years old) in Northern Ireland, a setting of …
