Influence of gamification affordance on young citizens’ motivation and learning performance toward digital civic education
The popularity of digital civic education has gained the attention of educators, policymakers, and public administrators worldwide across the globe. Research scholars have also been focused on understanding how young citizens' motivation and learning outcomes can be stimulated. The smart city
While urban shrinkage has extensively befallen cities around the world, the current responses to urban shrinkage have been regarded as deficient and required optimization to help shrinking cities achieve sustainable economic growth and higher quality of life. This paper deploys difference-in-difference (DID) and successfully finds, based on China’s national smart city pilot projects, significant effects of smart city development on shrinking citi…
The governance dilemmas of urban shrinkage
While existing research has deepened our understanding of global urban shrinkage, studies on the governance of urban shrinkage in China remain deficient. Based on extensive field research in Suihua, in Northeast China, and applying an institutionalist perspective, this study explored two critical challenges faced by Chinese political institutions concerning their governance of urban shrinkage. First, the absence of well-articulated opinions and c…

Measuring Environmental and Economic Performance of Air Pollution Control for Province-Level Areas in China
This paper proposes an improved three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to measure the environmental-economic efficiency (EEE) of air pollution control for 30 province-level areas of China during the period of 2012 to 2016. In this model, capital, labor, and total energy consumption are the three inputs, while gross domestic product (GDP) and waste gas emissions represent the desirable and undesirable outputs, respectively. This model a…
Chinese National Air Protection Policy Development
Given its wide involvement in and recognition by international organizations, China has signed many international agreements and negotiations. This study verified how and the extent to which changes in exogenous factors (e.g., international agreements and negotiations) affect Chinese governmental air protection policy development. Previous studies on policy network theory have demonstrated that exogenous factors affected the development of domest…

Using panel data for a sample of 28 provinces and municipalities over the period 1978–2008, the empirical findings show that there is significant spatial variation in the productivity effects of transport infrastructure in China. The highest output elasticity in the connection provinces of the central region means that transport investments the…
