Writing a History of Revolutions in Southern Europe
This response to the Annales ’ forum on my Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions focuses on the Southern framework of my analysis, on the place of the Greece case within this context, and on the chronology of the age of revolutions. It highlights that the term “South” was adopted by the revolutionaries themselves in Portugal, Spain, Piedmont, and Naples—but not in Greece. It argues that a comparative framework enables us to explore the Greek …
Mobility and Coercion in an Age of Wars and Revolutions
The political upheavals and military confrontations that rocked the world during the decades around 1800 saw forced migrations on a massive scale. This global history brings this explosion into full view. Rather than describing coerced mobilities as an aberration in a period usually identified with quests for liberty and political participation, this book recognizes them as a crucial but hitherto under-appreciated dimension of the transformations…

The second column of Origen’s Hexapla (Secunda), where the Hebrew text of the Old Testament is transcribed in Greek letters, was probably not composed by Origen: it existed before the composition of the Hexapla, and it was used by the Jewish community of Caesarea to read the Old Testament in its original language. However, the Secunda is very useful for the study of the pronunciation of Hebrew language in a period preceding the vocalization of th…
Gli Stati Uniti nella cultura politica del Risorgimento
Mediterranean diasporas
This round table discusses a collection that explores the circulation of ideas across and beyond the Mediterranean in the long nineteenth century, a space normally consigned to the margins of historiographical concerns and studied in discrete geographical areas. The commentators agree that the diasporic approach centred on biography taken by the collection demonstrates the existence of a plurality of liberal strands and political projects, highli…

Citizens or Faithful? Religion and the Liberal Revolutions of the 1820s in Southern Europe
Historians of liberalism have tended to ignore or underplay the contribution of southern Europe. However, in the 1820s this part of the world was at the forefront of the struggle for liberal values. This essay explores the relationship between constitutional culture and religion during the liberal revolutionary wave that affected Portugal, Spain, the Italian peninsula and Greece, by examining parliamentary debates, the revolutionary press, litera…
Aristocratic Liberalism and Risorgimento
The paper discusses the political thought of Cesare Balbo (1789–1853), a leading Risorgimento moderate liberal and politician, in the context of the efforts by the Piedmontese political elite to support and legitimise the constitutional regime introduced by King Charles Albert in 1848. Revising current interpretations of Risorgimento moderate liberalism as backward and provincial, it seeks to locate the political thought of Balbo and his colleagu…
Nationality before liberty? Risorgimento political thought in transnational context
The introduction to this special issue reviews the historiography on the political thought of the Risorgimento from De Ruggiero's famous History of European Liberalism (1925) to the most recent publications. It draws attention to the endurance of the post-war Gramscian paradigm that continues to underline the backwardness and traditional features of Risorgimento liberalism and political culture despite the challenges posed to that interpretation …
Risorgimento in Exile
The experience of exiles was fundamental for shaping Italian national identity. 'Risorgimento in Exile' investigates the contribution to Italian nationalism made by the numerous patriots who were forced to live in exile following failed revolutions in the Italian states.
Emotions, rationality and political intentionality in patriotic discourse
Exile and Nationalism
Italian nationalism was essentially the product of exile, as most Risorgimento patriots lived and published their work abroad after successive failed revolutions. Exile was turned by political refugees into one of the foundational myths of the Risorgimento as the narrative of the Italian nation fighting for independence. The article examines the different aspects of the representation of exile in political and literary texts, which justified exil…
Exiles from European Revolutions
Una scienza dell'amor patrio’
The aim of this article is to analyse the main economic and political writings of Giuseppe Pecchio (1785–1835), a Lombard economist and former Napoleonic civil servant who, after the failed uprising of 1821 in Milan, spent most of his life in exile in England. Against previous interpretations dating back to contemporary reviewers, it is argued that Pecchio was an admirer of English political economists and the English economic model, in spite of …
