  • The rise of subaltern gurus in western India

    Open Access•Parag D Parobo•ARTICLE•The Indian Economic & Social…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

Portuguese colonialism and the ramifications of state-sponsored Catholicism occupy centre stage in much of the scholarly writing on Goa. This preoccupation has meant that important parallel developments in Hindu society have tended to go relatively unnoticed. One such development is the meteoric rise in the first half of the twentieth century of subaltern gurus whose popularity is mistakenly seen as a sign of intensified religiosity. Drawing on a…

  • Shuddhi and The Nav-Hindu in Goa

    Open Access•Parag D Parobo•ARTICLE•South Asia Research•2024•Referencias: 16

In a much-publicised event in 1928, a section of the Goan Catholics of tribal origin reconverted to Hinduism. In this highly charged political context, the act of shuddhi framed the event as a straightforward homecoming, masking conflicting underlying interests. Analysing the palpable tensions around this event allows better understanding of how shuddhi was made possible and perceived at the local level, appreciating specifically the vulnerabilit…

  • Transformation of the Deities

Parag D Parobo•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2023

This article analyses the history of village deities in Goa from premodern times in order to understand the interactions between received traditions, the temple and the colonial state with regard to rights over temples and ownership of temple assets. More specifically, it looks at these developments to understand the actual relationship between temples and articulations of caste identities, and the claims over them. Ultimately, rights over temple…

  • Histories, Identities and the Subaltern Resistance in Goa

    Open Access•Parag D Parobo•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Values•2020•Referencias: 3

Spectacular outbreaks against the Portuguese receive regular scholarly attention. Resistance qualifies as an act against the colonial state, and in doing so, the dominant castes have succeeded in misrecognizing their social dominance. Fixing dominance on the colonial state narrows the agency of resistance and, consequently, produces a framework that leads to an emphasis on the formal properties of colonial power, ignoring its local and micro-cont…

  • The State, Networks and Family Raj in Goa

    Open Access•Parag D Parobo•ARTICLE•Studies in Indian Politics•2018•Citada por: 2

Goa achieved statehood in 1987. While from 1963 to 1989 there were only two legislators with ‘dynastic ties’, since 1990, there have been 23 political families contesting elections, with 10 dynastic candidates voted to the assembly. How might we understand the rise of ‘family raj’ in Goa’s politics? What does Goa teach us about the relationship between economy and politics? This article analyses Goa’s changing political economy and argues that ap…
