Cardiovascular fitness, physical activity, and metabolic syndrome risk factors among adolescent estonian boys
The results of the study indicate that CVF has a stronger longitudinal prediction value compared to moderate to vigorous physical activity in terms of metabolic risk factors in adolescent boys. Fitness remained a significant predictor if the influence of body fatness was removed from the analysis. Am. J. Hum. Biol. 28:782-788, 2016. © 2016Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Adipoq SNP45 associated with lean body mass in physically active normal weight adolescent girls
UNLABELLED: Recently, two single nucleotide polymorphisms at position 45 and 276 on the adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) have been recognized as determinants of total adiponectin levels, insulin resistance, and risk for diabetes in various obese populations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether these two polymorphisms are indeed determinants in the development of metabolic disorders or whether they are secondary to other confoundin…
Relationships between adiponectin, leptin, and blood lipids in physically active postmenopausal females
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationships between adiponectin and leptin with blood lipids (CHOL, HDL‐C, LDL‐C, and TG) in physically active postmenopausal women. One hundred and thirty‐four physically active practicing gymnastics (2–3 times per week) women between the ages of 51 to 85 years participated in this cross‐sectional study. Body height, body mass, waist‐to‐hip circumference ratio (WHR), and BMI were used as an…
Relationship of handgrip strength with anthropometric and body composition variables in prepubertal children
Plasma ghrelin concentration is a signal of decreased fat free mass in healthy elderly females
This study aimed to evaluate whether circulating ghrelin is associated with changes in different body composition parameters over a 12‐month prospective study period in healthy older females. On 41 postmenopausal women (mean age: 71.0 ± 6.5 years), ghrelin, leptin, insulin resistance (IR), and body composition parameters were assessed before and after the study period. Trunk fat: leg fat ratio (+3.6%), fat free mass (FFM) (−4.1%), glucose (+5.8%)…
Somatotype in 6–11-year-old Italian and Estonian schoolchildren
The influence of basic body and hand anthropometry on the results of different throwing tests in young handball and basketball players
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between basic body and specific hand anthropometric parameters with some specific and non-specific throw test results in young male handball and basketball players. The subjects included 34 handball and 38 basketball players of the 10-11 years old age group, 39 handball and 22 basketball players of the 12-13 years old age group and 39 handball players of the 14-15 years old age group. Bod…
Relationships between Body Fat Measured by DXA and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue Thickness Measured by Lipometer in Adults
The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between body fat measured by DXA and subcutaneous adipose tissue layers (SAT-layers) measured by LIPOMETER in adult males (n=28) and females (n=53). Body height and mass were measured and BMI was calculated (kg/m2). Measurements of the thicknesses of SAT-layers by LIPOMETER were performed at 15 original body sites. Body composition was measured using DXA. Total body fat % measured by DXA was …
The influence of anthropometric characteristics to the handgrip and pinch strength in 6-10-year old children
The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between handgrip and pinch strength values with basic body (body height, body mass, BMI) and with specific hand anthropometric parameters (fingers spans, lengths and perimeters) in prepubertal children. Body height, body mass and five fingers spans, lengths and perimeters were measured in 461 6-10 year old Estonian children according to Visnapuu & Jürimäe (2007). BMI was calculated (kg/m2)…
The influence of anthropometrical and flexibility parameters on the results of breaststroke swimming
The aim of this investigation was to study the possible relationships between anthropometry, flexibility and specific swimming results in female breaststroke swimmers. Subjects were 125 female breaststroke swimmers in age of 11-18 years. Body height and mass were measured and BMI (kg/m2 ) and Broca index (body height in cm - 100 = weight in kg) were calculated. The flexibility of hip external rotation, knee external rotation, ankle dorsal flexion…
Reproducibility of anthropometric measurements in children
The purpose of this study was to establish the reproducibility of a series of anthropometric measures performed twice during one week during a three year period in boys and girls. The subjects of this investigation were 39 children (21 boys and 18 girls), 9-10 year of age at the beginning of the study. Children were measured three times with one year interval. Children were classified by Tanner stage 1-2 during the first measurements, stage 1-3 d…
Anthropometric parameters and sexual maturation in 12- to 15-year-old Estonian boys
The aims of this study were 1. to fix main sexual maturation signs and anthropometric measurements, and 2. to investigate relations between maturational status and main anthropometric parameters (i.e. skinfolds, girths, lengths, breadths/lengths) in 12-15-year old boys. In total, 361 boys from Tartu, Estonia, were studied. Body height and weight, 9 skinfolds, 13 girths, 8 lengths and 8 breadths/lengths were measured. Pubertal stages were determin…
Relationships between plasma leptin levels and body composition parameters measured by different methods in postmenopausal women
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of body composition measured by different methods with different measurement errors on fasting plasma leptin level in normal body mass and obese postmenopausal women. It was hypothesized that the relationship between plasma leptin concentration and body fat is higher using more sophisticated laboratory methods (dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry, DXA) in comparison with field methods (bioelectrical…
Changes in anthropometrical characteristics during two years in 6 year old children
The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in anthropometrical characteristics during the last year (autumn-spring) in preschool and first year (autumn-spring) in school. Changes in anthropometrical characteristics during summer months were also studied (spring-autumn). The subjects were 130 boys and 122 girls, 6 years of age at the beginning of the investigation. The body height and mass were measured and the BMI (kg/m2) was calculated…
Relationships of physical activity and somatic characteristics with physical fitness and motor skill in prepubertal girls
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between physical activity and somatic growth with motor skill and physical fitness in prepubertal girls. The subjects were 215, 7-10-year-old girls. Somatic characteristics included 15 dimensions. Physical fitness was assessed by the EUROFIT battery of 9 tests. Motor skill development was based on quantitative and qualitative assessment of the overhand throw. Physical activity was assesse…
Assessment of motor ability of 4- and 5-year-old children
The aim of this investigation was to develop a test battery to measure the motor abilities of 4- and 5-year-old children. The subjects were 932 healthy kindergarten children from Tartu, Estonia: boys, 4 years, n = 205; boys, 5 years, n = 267; girls, 4 years, n = 224; girls, 5 years, n = 236. Height and body mass were measured, and the body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) was calculated. The following motor ability tests were used: 3-min run (cardiorespir…
