  • Region‐dependent patterns of trabecular bone growth in the human proximal femur

Open Access•Petar Milovanović, Danijela Djonic et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 55

OBJECTIVES: Parallel with body growth and development, bone structure in non-adults is reorganized to achieve the particular design observed in mature individuals. We traced the changes in three-dimensional trabecular microarchitectural design during the phases of locomotor maturation to clarify how human bone adapts to mechanical demands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Micro-CT was performed on biomechanically-relevant subregions of the proximal femur (…

  • The assessment of adipocere to estimate the post-mortem interval - a skeleton from the tidelands

Eilin Jopp-Van Well, Christa Augustin et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2016

This paper discusses the discovery of a skeletonized water corpse with hollow bones filled with adipocere found in the tidelands of the river Elbe close to Otterndorf (Wesermarsch, Cuxhaven). Through macroscopic and microscopic methods, the existing adipocere was described. The post-mortem interval was assessed by a comparison of the radiocarbon data and the indications about the preservation of adipocere from the literature. The investigation ha…

  • Bone microarchitecture at muscle attachment sites

Open Access•Ksenija Djukić, Petar Milovanović et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 51

The studies of entheses in bioarchaeology attempted to reconstruct the habitual physical activities of past populations. However, the studies of microarchitecture of the underlying bone are still lacking despite well‐known potential of bone internal microarchitecture to reflect mechanical loading. It is unknown whether different morphological expressions of entheseal changes (ECs) correlate with the microstructural characteristics of the underlin…

  • Scaling of Haversian canal surface area to secondary osteon bone volume in ribs and limb bones

    Open Access•John G Skedros, Alex N Knight et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 87

Studies of secondary osteons in ribs have provided a great deal of what is known about remodeling dynamics. Compared with limb bones, ribs are metabolically more active and sensitive to hormonal changes, and receive frequent low‐strain loading. Optimization for calcium exchange in rib osteons might be achieved without incurring a significant reduction in safety factor by disproportionally increasing central canal size with increased osteon size (…
