Sex estimation from dimensions of the base of the skull in Black South Africans
The pelvis and the skull are the two most utilised skeletal elements to estimate sex from skeletonised remains due to their sexually dimorphic traits. However, as increasingly more fragmented remains have been presented for analyses, other bones and their fragments have now been subjected to analyses for sex estimation. In the skull particularly, the base has shown to survive harsh conditions. In this study the foramen magnum region was explored …
Evolutionary Medicine
Unlike the traditional approach to medicine which is aimed at identifying and treating the proximate causes (i.e., symptoms) of disease, an evolutionary medicine approach is focused on identifying the evolutionary origins (ultimate cause) of a disease and to use this to help inform medical practice (Williams and Nesse 1991 ; Trevathan 2010 ; Ruhli and Henneberg 2013 ). Evidence in support of evolutionary medicine is provided by observers working …

The mass of the human brain
The current chapter examines allometric exponents as they apply to the evolution of the size, or mass, of the modern human brain relative to the mass of the body. The mass of the brain is considered as a single level of organisation of the nervous system and is treated separately to other levels of organisation. A comprehensive dataset is used to examine the relationship between brain and body mass in primates and hominids. This analysis allows u…
A Chiropractors’ Perception of the Role of Biological Race in Response to Treatment
In this paper we present a pilot survey focusing on the chiropractors’ views on possible racial differences in their patients’ response to treatment. A questionnaire was developed and validated through this study. Results of this - pilot survey - show that the majority of respondents did not see biological race as a significant factor in chiropractic treatment and response to it. Thus, one may hypothesise that the race concept in chiropractic mig…

The use of cranial variables for the estimation of body mass in fossil hominins
Estimating body mass/size/weight remains a crucial precursor to the evaluation of relative brain size and to achieving an understanding of brain evolution in fossil species. Despite the obvious close association between the metrics of postcranial elements and body mass a number of factors combine to reduce their utility. This study examines the feasibility of cranial variables for predicting body mass. The use of traditional regression procedures…
