Evaluating microstructural malting identification markers in charred archaeological cereal grains
Identifying ancient malting and brewing practices provides key insights into diet, technology, and social practices. This study evaluates the diagnostic reliability of microstructural malting markers in 50 charred cereal grains from six Danish archaeological sites spanning 1–1650 CE. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), two proposed methodologies for detecting malting were assessed: amylolytic modification of starch granules and thinning of …
Sun stones and the darkened sun
The discovery of more than 600 whole and fragmentary engraved stone plaques in the early third millennium BC infill from the ditches of a causewayed enclosure at Vasagård, on the Danish island of Bornholm, represents a unique find in Neolithic miniature art. Termed 'sun stones' in reference to the rayed images that characterise many of the plaques, the stones were deposited en masse over a short period. This article offers a fundamental classific…
Cinnabar for Roman Ephesus
First Metallurgy in Northern Europe
In this article we present the fragments of a crucible and a possible tuyère that provide evidence of early copper metallurgy in Scandinavia at least 1500 years earlier than previously thought. The technical ceramics were found in a cultural layer containing Early Neolithic Funnel Beaker pottery dating to around 3800–3500 bc beneath a long barrow dating to 3300–3100 bc . The presence of a copper alloy in the crucible is confirmed by three indepen…
