Whale Watching as Ecotourism
Australia has long tried to portray itself as an environmentally responsible state and has consistently been a strong supporter of Whale Watching as an alternative to the practice of commercial and 'scientific' whaling. Does consensus work? A case study of the Cloughjordan ecovillage, Ireland
Ecovillages have grown in number around the world since the early 1990s. This growth appears to be largely due to the contested nature of post/modernity and the desire to establish a more simple, meaningful and sustainable lifestyle that is centered on community. The end of the 1990s represented the high tide of neo-liberalism in most advance liberal democracies. Ten years later, and the global economy still demonstrates signs that modes of capit…
Sense of Place, Community, and Nature Management in Ogasawara, Japan
Multidisciplinary place studies are reviewed in order to provide a theoretical foundation on which to examine the Obeikei narrative, especially those who lived through the US Navy era (1945–1968) and who are now struggling to find their footing within the local community. The Obeikei sense of place and community are explored in terms of “getting by” within the Japanese hegemonic space, and “let nature be” within the discourse of nature management…

Both environments are dynamic and generate meanings that are relevant to the actor, contextualizing the spaces in which she/he acts. From a post-stucturalist perspective, place can be viewed a…
Exploring the cultural landscape of the Obeikei in Ogasawara, Japan
The southern Japanese archipelago of Ogasawara is currently being represented as a nature paradise, featuring a host of related nature/adventure-based ‘eco’ activities, with a growing representation of its historical and cultural attractions. Yet, the cultural landscape remains underrepresented, with limited mention made of the western settlement of these islands in 1830 or of their descendants who are still living there. One way to expand the re…
