    Open Access•Carlos A Scolari, Mar Guerrero-Pico et al.•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2026

This article examines findings from a 4-year study conducted in Spain on the labour dynamics within platforms, with workers in food delivery, transportation, cleaning, caregiving, and accommodation. • Video games as spaces for providing information and awareness of algorithmic control in the gig economy

    Open Access•Marta Fernández-Ruiz, Martina Piña et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2026•Referencias: 24

The gig economy has been explored recently in the media through videos, films, and series. Similarly, different video games have shown the ideology, values, and mechanisms that govern the gig economy. This article applies six mechanisms of algorithmic control at work to achieve a dual objective: to analyze how platform workers experience algorithmic control and to examine the extent to which video games, as a medium for raising critical awareness…

  • Riders on the road

    Open Access•Carlos A Scolari, Mar Guerrero-Pico et al.•ARTICLE•Work Organisation Labour &…•2025

This article applies an interface-centred framework to examine the everyday work of riders working for platforms in Spain. We present a close analysis of the interactions among riders and other human, institutional and technological actors before and after the Spanish ‘Rider Law’ came into force in 2021. The findings reveal the increasing complexity of the last-mile delivery interface, observed in the rise of a dense network of intermediary actor…

This study analyses YouTube videos about delivery riders in Spain as well as the channels in which the videos were uploaded. • Double the Tasks, Double the Control

    Open Access•Martina Piña, María-José Establés et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 47

A vast amount of literature on social media has researched how content creators develop practices to present themselves and play the 'visibility game' (Cotter, 2019). Similarly, platformization of work has led to algorithmic control through the logic of ratings and visibility. This article studies how platforms shape the practices of workers who carry out services in domestic spaces. We conducted a qualitative content analysis of 36 profiles in c…

  • Behavioral Effects of Framing on Social Media Users

Open Access•Sebastián Valenzuela, Martina Piña et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2017

We hypothesize that generic frames influence what news people share on Facebook and Twitter through three different routes: emotions, motivations, and psychological engagement. Using a mixed-methods design, a content analysis of a representative sample of articles published in six Chilean outlets was combined with in-depth interviews with digital journalists. After controlling for issue, newsworthiness, informational utility, valence, and other c…

Daniel Halpern, Martina Piña et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Education•2017•Referencias: 5

This paper examines the effects of cyberbullying using a mixed method approach, by combining interviews, focus groups and a survey of 7,000 students. In the inductive stage, and following an axial coding analysis, we identified 153 concepts related to conflicts, which were divided into three thematic units to explain the greater impact of cyberbullying: (1) social distance; (2) privacy exposure; and (3) range of the material. The survey concluded…
