  • Do physical activity and sedentary behaviour have an effect on burnout risk in Flemish secondary school teachers? A prospective study

Open Access•Yanni Verhavert, Elke Van Hoof et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Burnout in secondary school teachers is an increasing concern. More physical activity (PA) and less sedentary behaviour (SB) may be beneficial to reduce burnout risk in this population. However, no longitudinal evidence on the role of PA-intensities across PA-domains and the role of SB-domains exists. Furthermore, the teaching population, characterized by high PA levels, needs to be studied, as literature showed that leisure PA was less effective…

  • Compatibility of physical education curricula with physical literacy across 40 European countries

Open Access•Johannes Carl, Hannah Go et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Curriculum Studies•2025

Although the student-centred concept of physical literacy (PL) has been emphasized by UNESCO, knowledge about its adoption/implementation into PE remains scant. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the compatibility of PE curricula with PL in Europe. We collaboratively gathered a panel of experts encompassing 40 European countries. In the first step, the experts were invited to freely specify the compatibility of country’…

  • Obstacle course-based versus traditional physical education

Open Access•Elly van Hyfte, Eline Coppens et al.•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2025•Referencias: 2

Physical education (PE) offers an optimal setting for promoting higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and reducing sedentary behaviour (SB). This study examines the MVPA and SB among elementary schoolchildren during an obstacle course-based PE lesson and compares it to a traditional PE lesson, with the same students participating in both conditions. Moreover, it explores how gender, age and intrinsic motivation for PE relate to tim…

  • The impact of Covid-19 lockdown on physical activity and sedentary behaviour in secondary school teachers

Open Access•Yanni Verhavert, Tom Deliens et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

During the lockdown, we found in our sample that Flemish secondary school teachers showed an increase in SB that was 9 times as high as their PA increase. As a government, education network or school, it is crucial to sensitize, promote, and facilitate sufficient MVPA and/or walking, but likewise to discourage SB during pandemic-induced lockdowns

  • It Is Scary, but Then I Just Do It Anyway”

Open Access•Martin van Rooijen, Kristine De Martelaer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Children's risky play opportunities depend on supervising adults' attitudes and the play environment. The possibilities to engage in risk-taking outdoor play for children have seriously decreased over the last few decades, due to safety concerns and adults' preoccupation with protection. In response to this shift, research has increasingly focused on influencing factors on professional attitudes toward risk-taking in children's play. However, chi…

Open Access•Hannah De Laet, Yanni Verhavert et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools were closed, teachers had to teach from home and after a while, they had to return to the classroom while the pandemic was still on-going. Even before the pandemic, teachers were already more at risk for burn-out syndrome compared to the general population. Furthermore, not much research pertaining to this population has been carried out during the pandemic and so the impact of the pandemic on teac…

    Open Access•Katrijn Opstoel, Frans J Prins et al.•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2022•Referencias: 3

Personal and social development constitutes an important goal of physical education (PE) curricula worldwide. Few studies have analysed how PE teachers perceive and operationalise personal and social development goals in their lessons. This study sought to investigate the implemented curriculum of in-service PE teachers, that is, how PE teachers perceive and operationalise personal and social development goals. In sum, 12 experienced primary scho…

    Open Access•Evi Buelens, Marc Theeboom et al.•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 17

A considerable number of adolescents in Western societies live in socially vulnerable situations. Approaches to improve this situation ultimately aim to make institutional changes through a focus on individual development. With regard to the latter, there have been high expectations regarding sport volunteering’s contribution to human capital development. Nevertheless, little understanding of the underlying conditions for, and possible outcomes o…

  • Associations between different types of physical activity and teachers’ perceived mental, physical, and work-related health

Open Access•Inge Van Bogaert, Inge Bogaert et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Because secondary school teachers' levels of perceived health are low, they are an important target group for interventions aiming to improve health. Only leisure-time PA was associated with more positive perceived health. This finding may indicate that teachers performing more exercise during leisure time, or in a more autonomous way, may be more resistant to physical and mental health problems. Future research should verify whether promoting le…

  • Evaluation of a workplace intervention to promote commuter cycling

Open Access•Veerle Dubuy, Katrien De Cocker et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

The results of the dissemination study are promising. The adoption and implementation rates indicate that the 'Bike to Work: cyclists are rewarded' program seems to be a feasible workplace intervention. At the individual level, a higher score of commuter cycling was found among the employees aware of the program. Nevertheless, more evidence regarding long term effectiveness and sustainability of the intervention is needed
