USMGs Versus FMGs
Several earlier studies compared performance differences between USMGs and FMGs in inpatient care settings, mainly hospitals. This study compares performance differences between USMGs and FMGs in ambulatory care settings. The sample consisted of 14,203 patient episodes treated by 1,156 physicians (pediatricians, obstetricians/gynecologists, internists, and other specialty physicians). The study setting was a midwestern state. Little evidence was …
Domain of Practice and the Quality of Physician Performance
This study has attempted to determine the relationship between physician domain of practice and their quality of medical care. The study examined whether there was a quality difference in practice either 1) between general practitioners and specialists, or 2) between specialists practicing within and outside their specialty domains. The sample consisted of 454 physicians of Hawaii, involving 18 specialty categories: general practitioners (133) an…

Influence of Client/Colleague Dependence on Physician Performance in Patient Care
The study has attempted to determine how client/colleague dependence influences medical care received by patients. We have tested physician compliance with standards of care according to the degree to which the practice is visible to, and dependent upon, colleagues. Physician performance is measured in terms of compliance with established professional standards in five areas of practice: 1) the quality of medical care; 2) appropriateness of hospi…
Patient Race and Physician Performances
The study has attempted to determine the extent of the relationship between patient race and physicians' performances in patient care. The sample of the study consisted of 3175 hospital episode of patients discharged from 22 short-term general hospitals in the state of Hawaii. The episodes were derived from 15 major diagnostic categories. Physicians performances were measured on the basis of the quality of medical care provided, the appropriatene…
Interrelationships of Physician Performances
The study determined the intrarelationships and interrelationships of two sets of physician performance measures: technical quality and utilization of medical resources. The performance measures were based on 2,431 episodes in 15 diagnostic categories involving 454 physicians. A series of correlations were used to determine these relationships. The technical performance of physicians for prehospitalization, hospitalization, and posthospitalizatio…
U. S. Medical Graduates versus Foreign Medical Graduates Are There Performance Differences in Practice
This study has attempted to determine the relationship between physicians' medical education and their performances (technical quality and utilization of medical care resources) in offices and hospitals. The sample consisted of 506 physicians of Hawaii, involving 18 specialty categories. The study finds little evidence of the influence of the type of medical schools on physicians' technical quality and utilization of medical resources in practice…
Relative Importance of Physicians' Personal and Situational Characteristics for the Quality of Patient Care
This study measured the relative importance of physicians personal attributes (type of medical school attended time in practice and degree of specialization) and their work settings (type of ambulatory care settings and type of hospital) for the quality of patient care. The sample consisted of 454 physicians from 18 specialty categories in Hawaii in 1968. Relative importance was determined by comparing the marginal influence derived from the part…
Factors Determining the Quality of Physician Performance in Patient Care
The study determined the separate and joint effects of 1) physician specialty, 2) type of medical school attended, 3) time in practice, 4) type of ambulatory care setting, and 5) type of hospital on the quality of physician performance in patient care. The sample consisted of 454 physicians in 18 specialty categories. Multiple Classification Analysis was used to determine the effects of these predictors on the quality of physician performance. Th…
