Impact of a Mandatory Medicaid Case Management Program on Prenatal Care and Birth Outcomes
This study examined the impact of Philadelphia's mandatory Medicaid case management program (HealthPASS) on adequacy of prenatal care and birth outcomes among enrollees. A sample of 217 deliveries for HealthPASS patients at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) during 1988 was compared with a matched sample of 1988 deliveries at HUP for whom the payor was Pennsylvania's traditional fee-for-service Medicaid program. Screening for chest disease in college students
We conducted a survey of college health services to determine their policies regarding the use of screening chest radiographs and tuberculin skin tests. Pre-enrollment chest radiographs are prescribed for all incoming students by 24 per cent of the 531 respondents and for health professions students, foreign students, and intercollegiate athletes only by an additional 20 per cent, 19 per cent, and 6 per cent, respectively. The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate a program to teach medical students how to order diagnostic tests in a cost-effective manner. Improved Cost Allocation in Case-Mix Accounting
Traditionally, many hospital costs have been allocated to patients using indirect measures that do not always reflect the value of the resources used to provide care. When, for example, costs are allocated by multiplying the patient's charges by the hospital's ratio of costs to charges, the allocated cost does not reflect actual cost because the hospital does not uniformly charge for services in proportion to their cost. Physician Sensitivity to the Price of Diagnostic Tests
A questionnaire containing 11 patient management problems was completed by 495 physicians and medical students at an American and a Canadian medical school. Respondents indicated whether they would order a particular diagnostic test in each case, given five different prices for the test. Use of Diagnostic Services by Physicians in Community Practice
This study analyzes the use of diagnostic studies by community physicians. Data from billing claims for outpatient visits by Medicaid recipients in three northeastern Pennsylvania counties during a 38-month period were studied, including 55,420 visits to 336 physicians.
