Preventive services for the elderly
OBJECTIVES. This study was undertaken to determine whether adding a benefit for preventive services to older Medicare beneficiaries would affect utilization and costs under Medicare. METHODS. The demonstration used an experimental design, enrolling 4195 older, community-dwelling Medicare recipients. Medicare claims data for the 2 years in which the preventive visits occurred were compared for the intervention (n = 2105) and control (n = 2090) gro…
Predictors of Perceived Health Status in Elderly Men and Women
Baseline data on the perceived health status of participants (N = 5,201) in the Cardiovascular Health Study of the Elderly (CHS) are reported. The authors examined the predictive utility of health-related factors representing eight different domains, assessed gender differences in the prediction of perceived health, and tested a hypothesis regarding the role of known clinical conditions versus subclinical disease in predicting perceived health. The practice is staffed by faculty, residents, and health care extenders of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Division of Internal Medicine. Montgomery County, Maryland was the first major jurisdiction to pass a law requiring smoke detectors in all homes. Smoke detector coverage in the county was evaluated five years after the law's implementation and compared to the coverage in neighboring Fairfax County, Virginia, which has no such law. Firefighters visited 651 randomly selected owner-occupied homes and tested each detector. While a similar percentage of homes in Montgomery and Fair…

Development of an information system
The Johns Hopkins Hospital has developed a social work information system involving seven referral problem categories based on problems as identified by the referral source, ten problem categories for social work service, identified by the social work person after interview, and ten social work service categories similarly identified. The latter two categories include contracts with patients and expected outcomes together with categorization of a…
Use of ambulatory health services by the near poor
Individuals in the gray area between Medicaid eligibility and sufficient income to meet the costs of health care, the near poor, utilize health services less than other groups. As part of a study of health care behavior in an inner-city area based on a household survey of three distinct populations (HMO) members, public housing project residents, and a defined geographical area), we examined this question more thoroughly. Survey results show that…
Ambulatory care for chronic conditions in an inner-city elderly population
Factors affecting the extent to which individuals aged 65 and over living in inner-city households received health care for three chronic conditions (high blood pressure, heart trouble, arthritis) are examined. These factors are age, sex, living arrangements, and the presence of more than one chronic condition. Indicators of receiving care are having seen a health care provider within the previous six months and being on medication for the condit…
