  • Mobilization and Meaning

    Open Access•Myra Marx Ferree, Frederick D Miller•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1985•Citada por: 51•Referencias: 39

This paper presents a model of the mobilization of people into movements that is compatible with a resource mobilization perspective on social movement organizations as the unit of analysis, but substitutes a cognitive social psychology based on attribution theory and the sociology of knowledge for the incentive model typically used in this perspective. We focus on the problem, neglected by resource mobilization theorists, of explaining the trans…

Three approaches to explaining and predicting neighborhood satisfaction are compared in a survey of 550 New York City residents. The models are: a belief‐affect approach which proposes that evaluations of specific aspects of a community are combined to yield overall satisfaction ratings; a commitment approach, which looks at the impact of emotional and economic ties to the neighborhood; and an availability approach, which emphasizes the impact of…

  • Evaluation Apprehension, Social Desirability, and the Interpretation of Test Correlations

    Open Access•Charles B Thomas, Judith A Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1979

This paper investigates the relationship between the concepts of social desirability and evaluation apprehension. The Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale were administered to 63 Harvard and Radcliffe students. As predicted, there was a moderate negative correlation between social desirability and manifest anxiety in the (anonymous) high evaluation apprehension condition (r = −0.35, p = 0.05); and a subst…

  • Salience and the cognitive mediation of attribution

    Eliot R Smith, Frederick D Miller•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1979•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 4

Two studies of the impact of salience and informational factors on attribution and memory yielded findings on two general issues. First, manipulations of the amount of thought subjects gave to their attributions and of a delay before responding to attribution questions did not diminish the effect of salience on attribution; in fact, the delay increased the effect. Second, recall of the stim-ulus material was shown to be influenced by salience and…

  • Evolving Intergroup Techniques for Conflict Resolution

    Open Access•Stephen P Cohen, Herbert C Kelman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1977•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 4

The problem‐solving workshop is an approach to international conflict resolution based on intervention at the intergroup level and designed to provide inputs into policy processes. The pilot workshop described there included Israeli and Palestinian participants, meeting with a team of social scientists who served as a third party. Some of the features of the workshop included use of separate preworkshop sessions with each party to focus on intern…
