  • Social and Cognitive Influences in Group Brainstorming

Paul B Paulus, Vicky L Putman et al.•ARTICLE•European Review of Social…•2002

The creation of novel ideas often takes place in social contexts. Past research on brainstorming and other types of group tasks have shown that groups often perform poorly in comparison to conditions in which tasks are done individually. Past reviews have evaluated various factors that may be responsible for the production losses in group brainstorming (Diehl & Stroebe, 1987; Mullen, Johnson, & Salas, 1991; Stroebe & Diehl, 1994). We re-evaluate …

  • Sex Differences in Communication with Close Friends

    Open Access•NICOLE L OXLEY, Mary T Dzindolet et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

In 1990 Tannen reported that men have fewer close friends than women, men discuss less intimate topics with their friends than women, and men and women respond differently to close friends' problems. 168 students completed a three-page survey designed to examine Tannen's claims. Consistent with Tannen's observations, men discussed less intimate topics (politics and school or work) with their five closest friends and reportedly were less likely to…

  • Attitudes of Traditional and Nontraditional Students toward Their Classmates of Various Ages

    Open Access•Mary T Dzindolet, L B Weinstein et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

430 Cameron University students indicated the extent to which they agreed with 20 statements concerning attitudes toward older and younger students. A principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation indicated three underlying dimensions with statements favoring (1) younger students, (2) age diversity, and (3) older students. A 2 (traditional vs nontraditional students) × 2 (sex) between-subjects multivariate analysis of variance was pe…

  • A Case Study

    Open Access•Sharon C Putt, L B Weinstein et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

Alopecia areata, a common cause of hair loss, is generally considered the consequence of an autoimmune process. Both physiological and psychological factors have been implicated. Previous studies have not incorporated behavior modification in their treatment designs. In this study, three treatment techniques (hair massage, relaxation procedures, and monetary reward) were applied to a 16-year-old male with a five-year history of alopecia areata. C…

  • Social influence processes in group brainstorming

    Paul B Paulus, Mary T Dzindolet•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1993•Citada por: 16

A series of studies examined the role of social influence processes in group brainstorming. Two studies with pairs and 1 with groups of 4 revealed that the performance of participants in interactive groups is more similar than the performance of those in nominal groups. A 4th study demonstrated that performance levels in an initial group session predicted performance on a different problem 2 sessions later. In a 5th study it was found that the pr…
