Mood Disorders in Middle-Aged and Older Veterans With Multimorbidity
These findings suggest a need to integrate mental health assessment and treatment in chronic health care management for veterans
Using the IRB Researcher Assessment Tool to Guide Quality Improvement
Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are intended to protect those who participate in research. However, because there is no established measure of IRB quality, it is unclear whether these committees achieve their goal. The IRB Researcher Assessment Tool is a previously validated, internally normed, proxy measure of IRB quality that assesses 45 distinct IRB activities and functions. We administered this instrument to a sample of investigators and I…

Where do people go when they first become homeless? A survey of homeless adults in the USA
The longer a person is homeless, the more likely he or she is to experience poor health and be placed at higher risk for premature death. This makes interventions early in one's homelessness an important prevention strategy. However, little is known about where someone goes for help when they first become homeless and how well those sites are prepared to address the multitude of issues facing a homeless person. In order to address this question, …
Self-Reported Changes in Drug and Alcohol Use After Becoming Homeless
Objectives. We identified substance use patterns and factors associated with increased substance use after users become homeless. Methods. We carried out a 2-city, community-based survey that used population-proportionate sampling of 91 sites with random selection at each site. Results. Five hundred thirty-one adults were interviewed; 78.3% of them met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition criteria for subst…
Routine Screening for Intimate Partner Violence in an Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic
Intimate partner violence affects 5% to 22% of women seen in primary care settings.1–4 Routine screening of all adult women is recommended by advocacy and medical organizations.5–7 However, implementation of screening has not been studied outside of a research intervention. Physician barriers to screening include concerns about time, training, and lack of available treatments.8,9 Women report barriers to disclosure, such as confidentiality concer…
Variation in the Use of Red Blood Cell Transfusions; A Study of Four Common Medical and Surgical Conditions
This study assessed variation in red cell transfusion practice among adult patients hospitalized with ulcer disease (ULCER), and those undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), hip surgery (HIP), or total knee replacement (KNEE). The study design was a retrospective analysis of the 1989 MedisGroups Hospital Comparative Database, and the participants were adult patients presenting for their first admission with ULCER (N = 4,664), CABG (N …

Assessing the theoretical models for sex differences in causal attributions for success and failure
Experimental Social Gerontology
Social psychological theories and research methods have been a guiding influence in the study of aging for over three decades. However, in the past the emphasis has been more on the sociological than the psychological components of this approach. Sociologists, guided by theories and methods borrowed from sociology, have been the major contributors of new knowledge. More recently, this approach has been supplemented by another view emphasizing the…
Long-term effects of control and predictability-enhancing interventions
The long-term effects of participating in a field experiment on the effects of control and predictability-enhancing interventions are reported. Retirement home residents who had initially benefited from being exposed to a specific positive predictable or controllable event were assessed at three different intervals after the study was terminated. Health and psychological status data collected 24, 30, and 42 months after the study was terminated i…
