Measuring product differentiation by observing consumer search
In this article, we calculate various distance metrics to measure product differentiation by observing consumer search behavior directly. We compare these measures by analyzing a dataset of 1,642 digital cameras with 85 product characteristics and show that differences in the product characteristics are correlated with some of the measures of distance to a surprisingly high degree. The causal effect of agritourism on farm survival
We use three waves of census data containing detailed characteristics of the entire population of Austrian farms to examine the causal effect of agritourism on farm survival. To control for self-selection into agritourism, we exploit regional variation in tourism intensity that is exogenous to individual farms. This article investigates the relationship between local income inequality and firms’ location and product choices. Using detailed information on income at a regionally disaggregated level and individual data on Austrian restaurants, we show that product variety crucially depends on the distribution (in addition to the level) of income. We analyze the relationship between residence in an ethnic enclave and immigrants' labor market integration with respect to finding a first job in the receiving country.
