Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Needs of Middle-Aged and Older Adults
Background : Older adults in rural areas have unique transportation barriers to accessing medical care, which include a lack of mass transit options and considerable distances to health-related services. This study contrasts non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) service utilization patterns and associated costs for Medicaid middle-aged and older adults in rural versus urban areas. Methods : Data were analyzed from 39,194 NEMT users of Logis…
The impact of neighborhood social and built environment factors across the cancer continuum
Neighborhood social and built environments have been recognized as important contexts in which health is shaped. The authors reviewed the extent to which these neighborhood factors have been addressed in population‐level cancer research by scanning the literature for research focused on specific social and/or built environment characteristics and their association with outcomes across the cancer continuum, including incidence, diagnosis, treatmen…
Fulfilling Ethical Responsibility
By working with community members as partners, we expand the concept of beneficence to include "community beneficence," thus reducing the probability of "sins of omission
Building capacity for Health Impact Assessment
Aging, Place, and Technology
Objective: To review the range of promising technologies (e.g., smart phones, remote monitoring devices) designed to enhance aging in place; identify challenges for implementation of those technologies; and recommend ways to improve access to technologies in older populations. Method: A narrative review of research, practice, and policies from multiple fields, including information science, gerontology, engineering, housing and social services, h…
Physical Activity and Functional Limitations in Older Adults
Our findings provide further validation for an efficacy-based model of functional limitations. Walking-related efficacy may help reduce or possibly delay the onset of functional limitations
Mobility and Aging
Optimal mobility, defined as relative ease and freedom of movement in all of its forms, is central to healthy aging. Mobility is a significant consideration for research, practice, and policy in aging and public health. We examined the public health burdens of mobility disability, with a particular focus on leading public health interventions to enhance walking and driving, and the challenges and opportunities for public health action. We propose…
Environmental Correlates of Overweight and Obesity in Community Residing Older Adults
This research suggests that neighborhood environment may have an influence on BMI above and beyond walking activity
To GEE or Not to GEE
Two modeling approaches are commonly used to estimate the associations between neighborhood characteristics and individual-level health outcomes in multilevel studies (subjects within neighborhoods). Random effects models (or mixed models) use maximum likelihood estimation. Population average models typically use a generalized estimating equation (GEE) approach. These methods are used in place of basic regression approaches because the health of …
Predictive value of serial measurements of quality of life on all-cause mortality in prostate cancer patients
This study demonstrated that several domains of HRQOL were significantly associated with survival in a large group of patients with localized prostate cancer. This association was maintained over the course of disease regardless of the time of the assessment. Results from our study have both research and clinical relevance. They could provide information that enable us to not only improve communication with patients and families, but also to deve…

Problems With Vision Associated With Limitations or Avoidance of Driving in Older Populations
The risk ratio is relevant for evaluating individuals; the attributable risk is relevant to planning countermeasures in populations. Addressing specific problems related to vision should substantially reduce driving limitations due to eyesight
Hospital Policy and Practice Regarding the Collection of Data on Race, Ethnicity, and Birthplace
The US population has experienced dramatic increases in racial/ethnic diversity over the last several decades, particularly with immigration from Latin America and Asia.1–5 Research that uses race and ethnicity data provides an important foundation for designing programs to reduce health disparities.6 Birthplace, which serves as an indicator of migrant status, can be used to further identify subpopulations to be targeted for disease control and t…
Living Arrangements and Participation in Leisure-Time Physical Activities in an Older Population
Objectives: This is a cross-sectional investigation of living arrangements, social contacts, and level of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among residents of Sonoma, California, aged 55 and older. Methods: The odds of different levels of LTPA were assessed by living arrangements and social contacts following adjustment for measures of health, functioning, physical performance, selected health behaviors, and socioeconomic status for men and w…

Unemployment and the likelihood of detecting early-stage breast cancer
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that unexpectedly high unemployment in a community is associated with reduced odds that registered breast tumors are local. METHODS: The hypothesis was tested with data from San Francisco for the 132 months beginning with January 1983. RESULTS: Registered breast tumors were less likely to be local during periods of unexpectedly high unemployment (8% less likely among non-Hispanic …

Imbalance in an Older Population
Difficulties with balance are associated with limitations in activities of daily living. There is little information, however, about the epidemiology of imbalance. Imbalance, defined as the inability to maintain a full-tandem stand for 10 seconds, was assessed as part of an interview with 2,018 residents of Marin County, California, age 55 and older. The likelihood of imbalance was greater in women, those aged 85 and older, and those with less th…

Aging and Breast Cancer
The level of instrumental functioning of breast cancer cases aged 55 to 84 is compared to that of women of the same age without the disease. A total of 571 cases were selected through the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System and interviewed three (n = 463) and 12 (n = 422) months after diagnosis about their needs in transportation, housekeeping, meal preparation, and grocery shopping. A total of 647 controls aged 55 to 84 were selected…
The severity of breast cancer at diagnosis
A comparison was made of the incidence rates of localized, regional, and remote breast cancer between Black and White women by age at diagnosis. The analysis is based on 17,361 cases of breast cancer, newly diagnosed between 1973 and 1982, in Black and White female residents of the Detroit metropolitan area. Cases with breast cancer classified as local, regional, or remote were drawn from the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System of the…

Immigration and the popularization of social science, 1920 to 1930
This article examines how social scientists presented their views on immigration to readers of popular magazines from 1920 to 1930, a period of public debate on the merits of immigration restriction. By comparing the content of these magazine articles with professional journal articles on immigration, the representativeness of the social scientific material presented to the public can be assessed. While similar issues were discussed in popular an…

SSI students receive higher mean course grades and demonstrate greater improvement when compared with lecture-discussion students. Students of lower ability are more likely to benefit from a SSI format. It is also suggested that a modified lecture-discussion approach might lead t…
