  • Rethinking urban Wales

    Open Access•Neil Evans, Neil D Evans•ARTICLE•Urban History•2005•Citada por: 1

A more historical approach, centring on the idea of urbanization, is advocated, with the aim of drawing together…

  • Machi-zukuri as a new paradigm in Japanese urban planning

    Neil Evans•ARTICLE•Japan Forum•2002•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 1

It is seen as a radical departure from the conventional centralized, top-down, 'civil engineering' approach of Japanese urban planning ( toshi-keikaku ), or even as playing an important role in the regeneration of Japanese civil society over this period. Two case studies of machi…

The race riots which occurred in the British ports in 1919 can be understood in a broader context ‐ the multiple conflicts which struck the British Empire in the aftermath of the First World War. These greatly influenced the way in which the outbreaks were perceived and dealt with. The repercussions of the riots were felt in the colonies, especially in the West Indies. The major means used to regulate the entry of black people to inter‐war Britai…

  • Regulating the reserve army

    Neil Evans, N W Evans•ARTICLE•Immigrants & Minorities•1985•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 1

Cardiff's cosmopolitan population was expanded greatly during the First World War, but unwelcome once the exceptional demands of the war were over. A variety of governmental agencies became concerned with the regulation of this reserve army of labour. There were persistent attempts to deny entry to coloured seamen, to restrict unemployment relief and to brand the whole community as undesirable. Open Access•Neil Evans•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•1982•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

How did philanthropy adjust to the transformation of society in the nineteenth century? What was its role in social relations and in relieving poverty? Recent writers studying these issues have suggested the need for detailed studies at local level, and in studying some English towns and cities in the earlier part of the nineteenth century they have come to varying conclusions.
