To what extent can we speak of an Arendtian ecology? Building on a growing body of scholarship on Arendt and ecology, this article examines Hannah Arendt’s theory of technology to explore its implications for the possibility of an ecology of modern capitalism and its innovations. In the face of ecological degradation, ethical concerns, and the growing instrumentalization of innovation by capitalist and managerial logics, this article proposes a radical rethinking of innovation. This paper offers a critical reflection on the concept of responsible innovation as defined during the last decades. We argue that the emphasis on innovation as a process risks neglecting the very goals of innovation, namely societal desirability and acceptability.
