Themes central to sex-role socialization are traced, along with the processes by which dominance and female deference are developed. Gender differences in parent-child interactions, peer-group relations, classroom settings, children's observations of the marital dyad, and messages from television are examined. The link between sex-role socialization and the etiology and maintenance of wife abuse is discussed

The Effectiveness of Various Soothing Techniques on Human Neonates
In a study of the efficacy of soothing stimuli presented in different sensory modalities to human neonates, auditory, oral, vestibular, and thermal stimuli were compared and a nonstimulus control period was included. Behavioral ratings and heart rate measurements indicated that the soothing stimuli were all effective as compared with the control period, but no one stimulus was more effective than any other. A Comparison of Behavioral Ratings and Heart Rate Measurements in Human Neonates
Behavioral ratings and heart rate measurements of 20 neonates were recorded simultaneously under conditions of stimulation and nonstimulation. The two measurements were found to be highly correlated both between and within individuals. Consistent individual differences were obtained for both the behavioral ratings and heart rates produced by the experimental conditions.
