Assessing the potential impacts of floating Offshore Wind Farms on policy-relevant species
Our study investigates for the first time how floating Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) technologies could impact policy-relevant Mediterranean species, focusing on planned OWFs in the Cape Creus/Gulf of Roses (Spain, NW Mediterranean). Using the Generalized Impact Assessment framework, we identified pressure on diverse taxonomic groups. Our species selection prioritized species under European policy (Birds and Habitats Directives) and international/lo…
Stakeholder mapping and early detection of tensions in offshore wind development
This article presents a methodological framework for analysing the social dimensions of offshore wind energy based on newspaper content analysis to identify stakeholders, examine their positions, and anticipate potential areas of conflict and consensus in the early stages of planning. The case study focuses on the Gulf of Roses and Cap de Creus in the north-western Mediterranean (Spain). It combines a systematic review of 319 press articles (1777…
The unsustainability of the Omega-3 supply from seafood in the Mediterranean under global change
Cultural heritage and environmental ethical values in governance models
The seas as the next economic frontier have led to conflicts at the intersection of resource conservation and exploitation; a space where cultural values and social practices overlap. Underpinned by a literature review, surveys and personal interviews, this study identifies the main policy, socio-economic, environmental and cultural drivers of conflicts arising from the coexistence of recreational fishing -a major maritime activity in Mediterrane…
The potential benefits of water sports for health and well-being in marine protected areas
Non-motorized water sports requiring physical efforts such as swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, sailing and surfing are becoming increasingly popular in Mediterranean marine protected areas (MPAs). This research investigates the relationship between these types of water sports and practitioners’ psychological and mental health. It takes the MPAs of Cap de Creus and Gulf of Roses (north-western Mediterranean) as a case study and is underpinned by …
The Ocean Decade—Opportunities for Oceans and Human Health Programs to Contribute to Public Health
The COVID-19 pandemic reminds us that our health is vulnerable to immediate threats emerging from the ecosystems we inhabit. More insidious global threats include the increasingly overt consequences of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. As the largest connected ecosystem on Earth, the global ocean exerts a greater influence than any other on our climate and weather, affecting global food production and international trade. Much mor…
The Beneficial Effects of Short-Term Exposure to Scuba Diving on Human Mental Health
Exposure to outdoor blue spaces can help improve human health by reducing stress, promoting social relationships, and physical activity. While most studies have focused on the adverse health effects of scuba diving, very few have assessed its health benefits. Moreover, when scuba diving is done in large groups with no diving instructor or pre-dive briefing, negative environmental impacts are generated and negative impacts on human health may also…
The Roses Ocean and Human Health Chair
Involving and engaging stakeholders is crucial for studying and managing the complex interactions between marine ecosystems and human health and wellbeing. The Oceans and Human Health Chair was founded in the town of Roses (Catalonia, Spain, NW Mediterranean) in 2018, the fruit of a regional partnership between various stakeholders, and for the purpose of leading the way to better health and wellbeing through ocean research and conservation. The …
Benefits of Outdoor Sports in Blue Spaces. The Case of School Nautical Activities in Viana do Castelo
Participating in outdoor sports in blue spaces is recognized to produce a range of significant social benefits. This case study empirically analyzes the social benefits associated with the School Nautical Activities project carried out in Viana do Castelo (Portugal) in school-age children and adolescents. It consisted of a 4 year program in which scholars took part in nautical activities (surfing, rowing, sailing, and canoeing) in blue spaces onc…
