  • Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles

Open Access•Marius Zumwald, Knsel et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2020

In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…

  • Manganese Staining of Archaeological Glass

    Open Access•Olivier Schalm, K PROOST et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Referencias: 34

During the study of a large number of archaeological glass fragments, manganese-rich inclusions in leached layers were observed in a limited number of cases. This phenomenon occurs only in black-coloured leached layers. Since the formation mechanism of such manganese-rich inclusions is still unclear, a combination of several analytical techniques was used in order to investigate this phenomenon and, more specifically, to obtain more information o…

  • An Evaluation of Analytical and Interpretative Methodologies for the Extraction and Identification of Lipids Associated With Pottery Sherds From the Site of Sagalassos, Turkey

Open Access•Kerlijne Romanus, Jeroen Poblome et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2007•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 32

Three lipid analysis methods were applied to extracts of archaeological potsherds from the ancient city of Sagalassos, south‐west Turkey. In the fatty acid methyl ester fraction, obtained by selective transesterification of acylglycerols, the ratio of methyl palmitate to methyl stearate was determined. Secondly, by means of gas chromatography– combustion–isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC–C–IRMS), stable carbon isotope ratios were measured for t…

  • The implications of an epidemiological mistake

    Tee L Guidotti, P Jacobs•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993

OBJECTIVES. The response of community residents to a perceived cancer excess may include changes in attitude, health-related behavior, and property values. In 1986, a cancer agency conducted a study of cancer incidence (1979 to 1983) in two suburbs of Edmonton, Alberta, and reported elevations on the order of 25% over expected for most sites. Reanalysis of these data several months later revealed an error. Correction brought the rates into line w…
