Quantifying the global population residing at different altitudes
Background Human adaptation to low oxygen environments at high altitude has been extensively studied, with physiological responses commonly described as respiratory, hematological, cardiovascular, and metabolic. Although altitude is often classified into low, moderate, high, and very high ranges, the global number and distribution of people living at different elevations remain difficult to quantify because of population mobility and changing set…
A gender-integrated biopsychosocial model to understand cardiovascular risk in women working under environmental hazards
Women working in high-altitude (HA) mining environments are exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), a physiological stressor resulting from rotating work shifts between sea level and elevations typically above 3,000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l). CIH involves repeated exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, imposing significant biological, psychological, and social demands. Despite increasing female participation in the mining sector, the long-t…
Performance in the Six-Minute Walking Test Does Not Discriminate Excessive Erythrocytosis Patients in a Severe Hypoxic Environment
EE does not significantly affect 6MWT performance at high altitudes, nor the hemodynamic control during moderate aerobic exercise of subjects who live permanently in a severely hypoxic environment
Sars-CoV-2 Viral Load Analysis at Low and High Altitude
SARS-CoV-2 has spread throughout the world, including remote areas such as those located at high altitudes. There is a debate about the role of hypobaric hypoxia on viral transmission and COVID-19 incidence. A descriptive cross-sectional analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection and viral load among patients living at low (230 m) and high altitude (3800 m) in Ecuador was completed. Within these two communities, the total number of infected people at the t…
Benefits on Hematological and Biochemical Parameters of a High-Intensity Interval Training Program for a Half-Marathon in Recreational Middle-Aged Women Runners
(1) Background: half-marathon races are popular among recreational runners, with increases in participation among middle-aged and women. We aimed to determine the effects of two half-marathon training programs on hematological and biochemical markers in middle-aged female recreational runners; (2) Methods: ten women (40 ± 7 years) followed moderate intensity continuous training (MICT), based on running volume below 80% V ̇O 2 max, and another ten…
Long Covid at Different Altitudes
This is the first study describing post-COVID symptoms' persistence in low and high-altitude residents. Our findings demonstrate that women, especially those aging between 21-40, are more likely to describe Long-COVID. We also found that living at a high altitude was associated with higher reports of mood changes, tachycardia, decreased libido, insomnia, and palpitations compared to lowlanders. Finally, we found a greater risk to report Long-COVI…
Genotyped indigenous Kiwcha adults at high altitude are lighter and shorter than their low altitude counterparts
BackgroundAnthropometric measures have been classically used to understand the impact of environmental factors on the living conditions of individuals and populations. Most reference studies on development and growth in which anthropometric measures were used were carried out in populations that are located at sea level, but there are few studies carried out in high altitude populations.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the ant…
The Course of Posterior Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve
The course of the posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve (PACN) was studied via ultrasound (US) and dissection. The aim of this study was to reveal the anatomical relationships of PACN with the surrounding structures along its pathway to identify possible critical points of compression. Nineteen cryopreserved cadaver body donor upper extremities were explored via US and further dissected. During US exploration, two reference points, in relation w…
Intercostal Muscles Oxygenation and Breathing Pattern during Exercise in Competitive Marathon Runners
The study aimed to evaluate the association between the changes in ventilatory variables (tidal volume (Vt), respiratory rate (RR) and lung ventilation (V.E)) and deoxygenation of m.intescostales (∆SmO 2 - m.intercostales ) during a maximal incremental exercise in 19 male high-level competitive marathon runners. The ventilatory variables and oxygen consumption (V.O 2 ) were recorded breath-by-breath by exhaled gas analysis. A near-infrared spectr…
Lung Diffusion in a 14-Day Swimming Altitude Training Camp at 1850 Meters
Swimming exercise at sea level causes a transient decrease in lung diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL CO ). The exposure to hypobaric hypoxia can affect lung gas exchange, and hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction may elicit pulmonary oedema. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether there are changes in DL CO during a 14-day altitude training camp (1850 m) in elite swimmers and the acute effects of a combined training session of swim…
Amputation Risk Factors in Severely Frostbitten Patients
In recent years, the incidence of frostbite has increased among healthy young adults who practice winter sports (skiing, mountaineering, ice climbing and technical climbing/alpinism) at both the professional and amateur levels. Moreover, given that the population most frequently affected is healthy and active, frostbite supposes a substantial interruption of their normal activity and in most cases is associated with long-term sequelae. It particu…
