Health Status and Economic Assimilation of North Korean Defectors in South Korea
This study investigates the health status of defectors from North Korea and their process of assimilating into the economy of South Korea. Utilizing data from the National Health Insurance database spanning 2003 to 2022, we constructed a comprehensive dataset covering nearly all North Korean defectors in South Korea, alongside a 2 percent control sample that was randomly selected from the national population. Our findings indicate a higher incide…
Addressing Whiteness in communication scholar composition and collaboration across seven decades of ICA journals (1951–2022)
The persisting legacies of colonialism have called for scholars to be more active in their efforts to dismantle and decenter the normative foundations of Whiteness in scholarly practices. This article examines the intersectional structures of authorship and collaboration patterns among scholarly teams within five flagship Communication journals. We used a bibliometric analysis to examine the race, gender, institution, and institution type of 11,2…
Learning to Control Complex Robots Using High-Dimensional Body-Machine Interfaces
When individuals are paralyzed from injury or damage to the brain, upper body movement and function can be compromised. While the use of body motions to interface with machines has shown to be an effective noninvasive strategy to provide movement assistance and to promote physical rehabilitation, learning to use such interfaces to control complex machines is not well understood. In a five session study, we demonstrate that a subset of an uninjure…
Health-Seeking Patterns of Female North Korean Defectors in South Korea for Mental Health
Utilizing data from South Korea’s National Health Insurance Database, which covers the entire population, this study investigates the health-seeking patterns of North Korean defectors in South Korea, focusing on mental health issues. We find that female North Korean defectors utilize mental healthcare services significantly more than male defectors and more than their matched counterparts among either South Korean natives or other immigrants. Reg…
Influence of preparedness on caregiver burden, depression, and quality of life in caregivers of people with disabilities
Introduction Caregiver preparedness is defined as the perceived preparation of caregivers to care for the physical and emotional needs of the patient. Purpose This study investigated caregiver preparedness and its influences on caregiver burden, depression, and quality of life (QoL) in caregivers of individuals with disabilities. Methods We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional survey study on caregivers caring for patients with disabilities. S…
Contributing Factors to the Burden on Primary Family Caregivers of Stroke Survivors in South Korea
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors associated with the burden on primary family caregivers of stroke patients at home without care services. For this study, the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation (KOSCO) data were used. Of the total 8010 caregivers, 1133 family caregiver burden was assessed with the shortened Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) 3 months after stroke. Patient and caregiver-related factors affect…
Changes in Long-Term Functional Independence in Patients with Moderate and Severe Ischemic Stroke
This study investigated the long-term functional changes in patients with moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke. In addition, we investigated whether there was a difference between the modified Barthel Index (MBI) and Functional Independence Measure (FIM) according to severity. To evaluate the changes in the long-term functional independence of the subjects, six evaluations were conducted over 2 years, and the evaluation was performed using MBI and …
The Association between New-Onset Depressive Symptoms and Participating in Medical Check-Ups among Elderly Individuals
The association between adherence to medical check-ups and new-onset depressive symptoms, after adjusting for comprehensive risk factors such as social characteristics, remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the association between mental health and participating in medical check-ups. The survey data of participants aged 60 to 89 were recruited from the seventh Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging. The primary outcome was new-onset depressive …
The Association between Replacement Drivers and Depressive Symptoms
A replacement driver is a type of gig worker who provides driving services to the target point with the drunk driver's own car. This study aimed to examine the association of replacement drivers (ref: paid workers) with depressive symptoms. Information on replacement drivers was collected through online/offline surveys. Data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were applied to construct the control group. The Patien…
Geopolitical Risk on Stock Returns
Serial, self-terminating search can be distinguished from others
Geopolitical Risk on Stock Returns
We investigate how corporate stock returns respond to geopolitical risk in the case of South Korea, which has experienced large and unpredictable geopolitical swings that originate from North Korea. To do so, a monthly index of geopolitical risk from North Korea (the GPRNK index) is constructed using automated keyword searches in South Korean media. The GPRNK index, designed to capture both upside and downside risk, corroborates that geopolitical…
How Important Is Behavioral Change during the Early Stages of the Covid-19 Pandemic? A Mathematical Modeling Study
How important is the speed and intensity of behavioral change due to government policies, such as enhanced social distancing or lockdown, when an emerging infectious disease occurs? In this study, we introduce a deterministic SEIR model considering the behavior-changed susceptible group to investigate the effect of the speed and intensity of behavioral change on the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. We used epidemiological data from South Korea …
Holocene sedimentation in the Hupo Trough of the southwestern East Sea (Japan Sea) and development of the East Korea Warm Current
Various sediment properties, such as mean grain size, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratio, CaCO 3 , and biogenic opal content, were analyzed for a box core (BC02; 45 cm long) and a gravity core (GC02; 628 cm long), which were collected from the western margin of the Hupo Trough located off the eastern coast of Korea. The study area has been affected by the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), a branch of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC). Th…
