  • Correlations between dental wear and oral cavity characteristics

    Open Access•Loren R Lease•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2020

The etiology of nonmetric oral cavity characteristics, mandibular torus, palatine torus and oral exostosis, is complex. The degree to which traits' presence and expression is the result of genetic and environmental interactions is not fully understood. More than age, sex or ancestry, the degree of dental wear and tooth loss influences the presence and expression of the oral cavity traits. The sample can be characterized as the presence of exostos…

  • Absence of Association between Body Size and Deciduous Tooth Size in American Black Children

    Open Access•Loren R Lease, Edward F Harris•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2018•Citada por: 4

Weak positive associations between tooth size and body size have been documented for the permanent dentition. Presumably, if the deciduous dentition were under the same genetic controls as the permanent, there would also be a discernable association for the deciduous teeth in young children. The deciduous dentition of 133 modern American Black children was examined to determine the correlations between body size and tooth size. The results, based…

  • A descriptive study of African American deciduous dentition

    Open Access•Loren R Lease•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2018•Referencias: 2

Descriptive studies of the deciduous dentition morphology have been presented as an inclusion in permanent dentition studies, the focus of archaeological populations or on specific traits within modern populations. The present study describes 25 morphological traits of deciduous dentition in two African American samples from Memphis, TN and Dallas, TX (N= 218), and a European American sample (N=100) from Cleveland, OH. These traits represent the m…

  • Correlations between deciduous and permanent tooth morphology in a European American sample

    Open Access•H J H Edgar, Loren R Lease•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2007•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 49

The expression of dental morphological characteristics is partially genetically controlled, and is assumed to be similar in deciduous and permanent dentitions. However, there are few published data comparing normal morphological variation between the two dentitions in the same individual. For the current study, data were collected from European Americans ( N = 54) whose teeth were cast both as children and adults. We observed 19 trait expressions…

  • Evolution of genetically correlated traits

    Open Access•Leslea J Hlusko, Loren R Lease et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 56

Within a population, only phenotypic variation that is influenced by genes will respond to selection. Genes with pleiotropic effects are known to influence numerous traits, complicating our understanding of their evolution through time. Here we use quantitative genetic analyses to identify and estimate the shared genetic effects between molar size and trunk length in a pedigreed, breeding population of baboons housed at the Southwest National Pri…

  • Brief communication

    Open Access•Loren R Lease, Paul W Sciulli•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 9

This study employs metric and morphological features of the deciduous dentition for discriminating between European‐American and African‐American children and providing allocation rules (regression equations). Five logistic regression equations are presented, with the percentage of correct allocation to group of between 90.1–92.6%. All five equations employ three metric traits (the mesiodistal diameters of the mandibular deciduous canines and ant…

  • Mesiodistal tooth crown dimensions of the primary dentition

    Open Access•Edward F Harris, Loren R Lease•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 75

This analysis reports on a spatial‐temporal survey of published studies of primary tooth crown dimensions in humans (80 samples). Mesiodistal data are analyzed for the 10 tooth crown dimensions. The purpose was to evaluate the numerous case reports (descriptive analyses of single samples) in the literature in order to assess patterning of variation 1) in tooth size, 2) among tooth types, 3) across sexes, 4) with space (historical affinity), and 5…
