This study from the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC), Vilnius, Lithuania, presents a detailed description of the sample preparation methods employed in the laboratory, with a focus on two AMS systems: a single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) and a low energy accelerator (LEA). A pivotal aspect of this article is our participation in the GIRI intercomparison test, demons…

  • New insights into the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age (1100–400 cal BC) communities in the southeastern Baltic

Open Access•Karolis Minkevičius, Giedrė Piličiauskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2023

This paper presents the findings of a research project aimed at reconstructing the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age communities in eastern Lithuania. We focused on examining archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological assemblages from three hillforts alongside δ13C and δ15N stable isotope analysis of plant and animal remains. Our results suggest that local populations primarily relied on growing domestic plants and animals for their subsiste…

A set (n = 37) of new human bone radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry ( 14 C AMS) dates from 11 Lithuanian Late Roman Period–Migration Period cemeteries is presented and discussed in the light of the established schemes of archaeological chronology. The focus of the paper is on the burials of the military and social elite, which indicate the emergence of new cultural traditions in E–S and W–Central Lithuania or the immigration that took plac…

  • Analysis of Radiocarbon Distribution in the Eutrophic Lake Fish Assemblage Using Stable C, N, S Isotopes

Open Access•Rūta Barisevičiūtė, Vytautas Rakauskas et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Referencias: 37

The carbon isotope distribution and its relationship with stable N and S isotope ratio values were investigated within a fish assemblage from the shallow lake Tapeliai, which is constantly affected by inflows of 14 C depleted water from the surrounding watershed mires. The “conventional” radiocarbon age within the fish from this lake varied from 119 to 693 yr. The 14 C/ 12 C and δ 13 C values correlated significantly (r=0.85 p 14 C/ 12 C values a…

  • Horses in Lithuania in the Late Roman–Medieval Period (3rd–14th C AD) Burial Sites

Open Access•Giedrė Piličiauskienė, Laurynas Kurila et al.•ARTICLE•Animals•2022

The tradition of burying horses in Lithuania lasted from the Early Roman period until the late 14th C AD. It was the longest-lasting custom in Europe, which has left about 2000 known horse burials. This paper publishes the osteometric data and age of horses found in Lithuanian cemeteries and castles of the 3rd–14th C AD, over 200 individuals in total. These are the remains of all the horses still stored in Lithuanian institutions. The paper discu…

  • Vestiges of the Huns? The Radiocarbon-Based Chronology of the Trilobate Arrowheads from Plinkaigalis Cemetery, Central Lithuania

Laurynas Kurila, Giedrė Piličiauskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica•2021•Citada por: 3

Until presently, over 60 trilobate arrowheads characteristic of Asian nomads have been found in Lithuanian hillforts or their adjacent settlements, some of them in destruction layers. These finds encouraged Lithuanian archaeologists to create a narrative about the Huns severely raiding into the region in the 5th century AD . However, it is accepted as an axiom rather than a topic for research due to the lack of precise chronology. From the Plinka…

  • Manufacture of the Well-Known Central and Northeastern European Eye Fibulae

Open Access•Audronė Bliujienė, Kęstutis Peseckas et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Referencias: 17

The emergence and widespread distribution of eye fibulae as adornment objects, from the northern provinces of the Roman Empire to northeastern Europe and Scandinavia, as well as their typology have been widely explored. Currently in Lithuania, a total of 209 eye fibulae dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries are known. The geographical distribution, typology and chronology of these Early Roman Period jewelry artifacts do not present any problem. How…

Tomas Rimkus, Žilvinas Ežerinskis et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 20

The paper presents directly dated evidence of microlithic and blade pressure technology from the newly discovered Žingiai Stone Age site situated in eastern Lithuania. During its extensive excavations in 2017–2018, numerous features containing typologically discerned lithic material and datable organic were uncovered. One feature, in particular, No. 11, contained preserved fragments of animal bones and wood charcoal. Its lithic inventory consiste…

  • The Last Swiderians in Lithuania

Open Access•Gabrielė Gudaitienė, Justina Šapolaitė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2019

This paper focuses on an issue that was, and still remains, unsolved in Baltic Stone Age archaeology: the dating of the very end of the period of Swiderian culture. This time, the questions raised are what cultural unit (or units) should be considered as the last Swiderians, and who were the last tanged point users in general? In addition, the latest AMS 14C dates from the Mesolithic Pabartoniai 1 site in central Lithuania are taken into consider…

  • Assessment of the Contamination by 14 C Airborne Releases in the Vicinity of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant

Open Access•Algirdas Pabedinskas, Evaldas Maceika et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 22

A radiocarbon ( 14 C) activity analysis in the tree rings around Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP) has been carried out with the aim to test the hypothesis to use 14 C tree-ring analysis data as a tool for the reconstruction of gaseous releases from NPP to the environment. The INPP has been in decommissioning state since the end of 2009. Tree-ring samples for 14 C analysis were collected 7 yr after final power unit shutdown from the INPP vicini…

  • Tracing Carbon Isotope Variations in Lake Sediments Caused by Environmental Factors During the Past Century

Open Access•Rūta Barisevičiūtė, Evaldas Maceika et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 64

In this study, we examined how land use and urbanization changes in adjacent areas affected biological productivity and carbon cycling in a lake ecosystem over 100 years and how these changes are reflected in carbon isotope variations. We performed radiocarbon ( 14 C) activity and stable carbon isotope ratio analysis in two organic fractions: humin and humic acids of lake sediment. Additionally, we performed pigment and diatom analysis and determ…
