Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals
We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…
Social care costs for community‐dwelling older people living with frailty
International evidence indicates that older people with frailty are more likely to access social care services, compared to nonfrail older people. There is, however, no robust evidence on costs of social care provided for community-dwelling older people living with frailty in their own homes. The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between community-dwelling older people living with frailty, defined using the cumulative d…
Seasonality and season of birth effect in the UK Biobank cohort
OBJECTIVES: Humans live in environments that reduce the impact of seasonal cues. However, studies suggest that many aspects of human biology, such as birth, metabolism, health, and death are still annually rhythmic. METHODS: Using UK Biobank, a large (N = 502 536) population-based resource, we investigated the influence of seasonality on birth rate, basal metabolic rate, health, reaction speed, and sleep. We also investigated the association betw…
Cognitively stimulating activities and risk of probable dementia or cognitive impairment in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing
We found that volunteering and internet use were associated with reduced risk of cognitive impairment. Associations between newspaper reading or social club membership and cognitive impairment may be due to time-varying confounding affected by prior exposure
Associations Between Self-Reported Sensory Impairment and Risk of Cognitive Decline and Impairment in the Health and Retirement Study Cohort
Self-assessed sensory impairment is independently associated with cognitive decline and incident possible CIND and probable dementia. Further studies are needed to identify the mechanism underlying this association and to determine whether treatment of sensory impairment could ameliorate cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia among older adults
Physical activity in older age
Regular physical activity helps to improve physical and mental functions as well as reverse some effects of chronic disease to keep older people mobile and independent. Despite the highly publicised benefits of physical activity, the overwhelming majority of older people in the United Kingdom do not meet the minimum physical activity levels needed to maintain health. The sedentary lifestyles that predominate in older age results in premature onse…
Genome-wide association study identifies 74 loci associated with educational attainment
Interactions Between Depression and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms
OBJECTIVES: Depression and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) have been found to co-occur among aging men. The present study attempted to clarify the nature of this relationship, considering adverse life events as potential moderators and the inflammation as an underlying biological mechanism. METHODS: The relationship between depression and LUTS was evaluated using data from the European Male Ageing Study, the largest multicenter population-ba…
Sexual Health and Positive Subjective Well-Being in Partnered Older Men and Women
Within the context of a partnered relationship continuing sexual desire, activity and functioning are associated with higher SWB, with distinctive patterns for women and men
Comparison of hypertension healthcare outcomes among older people in the USA and England
BACKGROUND: The USA and England have very different health systems. Comparing hypertension care outcomes in each country enables an evaluation of the effectiveness of each system. METHOD: The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the Health and Retirement Survey are used to compare the prevalence of controlled, uncontrolled and undiagnosed hypertension within the hypertensive population (diagnosed or measured within the survey data used) aged …
Sexual Health and Well-being Among Older Men and Women in England
Terminal Pathologies Affect Rates of Decline to Different Extents and Age Accelerates the Effects of Terminal Pathology on Cognitive Decline
After sex, age, and demographics have also been considered, different terminal pathologies are associated with markedly different rates of decline. Age accelerates pathology-related decline. This raises the further question as to whether any, or how much of, age-related cognitive decline is brought about by other causes than an increasing burden of pathologies
