You have to be fluid’. Exploring the applicability of prison officer types to the Irish Prison Service
This study explores Irish prison officers’ views on the applicability of existing prison officer typologies to the Irish Prison Service. A thematic analysis of data from semi-structured interviews with 24 Irish prison officers indicated that while participants felt some typologies could reflect how officers approached their work, prison officer types were conceptualised as representing different dimensions of doing prison work, which officers cou…

Implementation of the Icelandic Prevention Model
Environmental drug prevention interventions are gaining momentum alongside and in concert with ‘classical’ prevention practices such as school, family and community interventions. The Icelandic Prevention Model (IPM) is particularly gaining attention because of its innovative environmental approach and because of its supposed impact on lowering (the onset of) substance use among youth during the past two decades in Iceland. Although this model is…
Interplay Between Sensation Seeking and Parental Rules in the Emergence of Heavy Episodic Drinking
This study examined the parallel mediational processes between sensation seeking and parental rules on alcohol, in the emergence of heavy episodic drinking (HED) in adolescents. Data were drawn from a U.K. clustered randomized control trial (control arm only, N ≈ 6,300, M age at baseline = 12.5). Using parallel process latent growth curve analysis, stricter parental rules at baseline were found to be associated with greater declines in sensation …
Present orientation, future orientation and alcohol use in Northern Irish adolescents
Earlier initiation into more problematic drinking behaviour has been found to be associated with more problematic drinking later in life. Research has suggested that a lower future time perspective (and higher present time perspective) is associated with health-compromising behaviours such as problematic alcohol use in college student, University undergraduate and general population samples. This study used a cross-sectional design to examine whe…
A profile of adolescent cocaine use in Northern Ireland
Using Physical Barriers to Prevent In-Ground Wooden Pole Decay
A scholarly article by authors Alan R. Howgrave-Graham, Laurie J. Cookson, and Andrew Percy published in The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability: Annual Review
Damaged youth
As Northern Ireland transitions to a post‐conflict society the nature of violent victimization and its influence on adolescents following the “Troubles” becomes an even more important area of interest. Adolescents are particularly at risk of victimization and associated social, emotional, and psychological health problems. In this analysis of the fifth year of the Belfast Youth Development Study (BYDS), the prevalence and implications of exposure…
School exclusion drug use and antisocial behaviour at 15/16 years
Young people excluded from school face additional challenges compared with their contemporaries in mainstream school throughout adolescence, particularly at the end of compulsory schooling when aged 16 years. This paper reports on the experiences of 77 young people excluded from school at year 12 when aged 15/16 years. They were participating in the Belfast Youth Development Study during the period immediately prior to the end of compulsory schoo…
Exclusion and Marginalisation in Adolescence
Young people excluded from school are a group at an increased risk of drug use and antisocial behaviour during adolescence and later marginalisation and exclusion from society in adulthood. As part of the Belfast Youth Development Study, a longitudinal study of the onset and development of adolescent drug use, young people who entered post-primary school in 2000 (aged 11/12 years) were surveyed annually on four occasions. This paper reports on fi…
Drug use patterns and behaviours of young people at an increased risk of drug use during adolescence

Secular Trends in Substance Use
The resolution of political conflict has led some to suggest that Northern Ireland will now face a range of social problems that have been ignored or suppressed by the Troubles. One such area is adolescent drug use. In this article, a review of a range of data sources shows that drug use, with few exceptions, has increased since the emergence of the ongoing peace process. Social and political changes and enhanced paramilitary involvement in the d…
