Project diplomacy
China has significantly increased its presence across Africa over the past decades. This engagement is commonly considered to build soft power through ‘project diplomacy’, i.e. influencing public perceptions through infrastructure construction. We evaluate whether the attributes of a project shape public opinion. We hypothesise that a project that employs local labour and management, has minimal costly impacts, and secures positive endorsements b…

The Political Economy of Foreign Direct Investment in Developing Countries
We provide an introductory survey of the academic literature addressing the political and economic issues surrounding foreign direct investment in developing countries. We begin with an examination of the motivations behind foreign direct investment before turning to governance issues relating to the attraction and harnessing the consequences of international investments, which extend well beyond questions of employment and economic growth. Engaging the dragon
China’s rise as a global economic and political power has created a policy puzzle for established global players. For the United Kingdom (UK), the policy towards China has pursued a dual emphasis: seeking commercial benefits and promoting a positive social and political change. We explore the scope and tone of official UK policy publications on doing business with China. We argue that, while these documents reflect some of the predominant concern…
Electoral systems and trade-policy outcomes

We build on the latter body of research to generate a new 13-point index that …
Trading representation
A multidisciplinary literature explores the implications of economic diplomacy, but has largely ignored international cooperation on economic agreements. We provide a first exploration of the implications of bilateral diplomatic missions for the formation of preferential trade agreements (PTAs). We argue that high-level diplomatic relations increase the likelihood of PTA ratification between two countries because diplomats have a number of politi…
The Effectiveness of Monetary Policy Anchors
Analyses of monetary policy posit that exchange-rate pegs, inflation targets, and central bank independence can help anchor private-sector inflation expectations. Yet there are few direct tests of this argument. We offer cross-national, micro-level evidence on the effectiveness of monetary anchors in controlling private-sector inflation concerns. Using firm-level data from eighty-one countries (approximately 10,000 firms), we find evidence that “…
