  • Illiberal Regime Types

    Nenad Dimitrijević•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Illiberalism•2021

The chapter discusses different types of illiberal regimes: dictatorship, despotism, tyranny, autocracy, totalitarianism, and authoritarianism. In a preliminary sense, these regimes are identified as “illiberal” because they are not based on the primacy of individual liberty. In institutional terms, they do not recognize the supremacy of rights, limited government, or the rule of law. The chapter combines conceptual, institutional, and social-his…

  • Democracy disembedded

    Open Access•Nenad Dimitrijević•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 19

Democracy is in serious difficulties. Three features of the crisis stand out. First is the dominant culture of disillusionment in democracy, which transpires as the mistrust in constitutionalist institutions and values. Second, political authority, both at domestic and international levels, is largely substituted by the rule of non-transparent and unpredictable social powers. Third, democratic states are deprived of much of their capacity to gove…

  • Liberal autonomy in a troubled context

    Open Access•Nenad Dimitrijević•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2017•Referencias: 4

Autonomy, understood as self-rule, is almost routinely accepted as one of the core liberal concepts. Still, a closer view reveals that both the status and meaning of autonomy are controversial. The text departs from a short summary of the main theoretical disputes surrounding the concept. A critique of the standard internalist account is followed by an attempt to offer reasons for accepting a relational reading of autonomy. The central question o…

  • Constitutional theory in times of crisis

    Open Access•Nenad Dimitrijević•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

The contemporary global crisis can be explored in different perspectives. This text focuses on constitutionalism. It asks whether constitutionalism still matters. Responding to this question requires revisiting the basic analytical and normative concepts that shape individual autonomy, polity, law and democracy in the context of globalization. Part I of the article introduces the question of the crisis of constitutionalism. It briefly explores th…

  • Moral knowledge and mass crime

    Open Access•Nenad Dimitrijević•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2010

In this article I ask how moral relativism applies to the analysis of responsibility for mass crime. The focus is on the critical reading of two influential relativist attempts to offer a theoretically consistent response to the challenges imposed by extreme criminal practices. First, I explore Gilbert Harman’s analytical effort to conceptualize the reach of moral discourse. According to Harman, mass crime creates a contextually specific relation…

  • Justice beyond Blame

    Open Access•Nenad Dimitrijević•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2006•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 10

Truth commissions have existed as mechanisms of transitional justice in some of the societies confronted with legacies of the criminal past. The author focuses on the question of the foundational justification of the idea of a truth commission. While recognizing the complexity and importance of moral and political considerations that are conventionally invoked to justify the existence of this body, the author aims at offering an alternative justi…
