  • Organizing Feminism

    Open Access•Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2026

This essay argues that contemporary feminist political imagination is constrained by the dominance of the “New York circle” in narratives of late 1960s and early ’70s radical feminism. This focus has marginalized other feminist groups and reinforced a “progress narrative” that dismisses all early radical feminism as irredeemably white, anti-lesbian, and anti-trans. In response, the essay recovers the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union (CWLU) as a m…

    Open Access•Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Democratic Theory•2023•Referencias: 1

In this article I recuperate a structure-oriented account of a politics of becoming from the work of Iris Young, one that rejects identity politics to focus instead on redressing structural injustice. Young offers a theorization of democracy that at once acknowledges our inner multiplicity and our individual capacity to shape our identity, and views equality and inclusion as important political goals that require eliminating structural injustice.…

  • Dead Dogma and the Limits of Feminist Political Imagination

    Michaele Ferguson, Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2022

Commentators frequently describe the #metoo movement as a kind of "consciousness-raising." This language works to position #metoo within a radical, political tradition of feminist activism, yet obscures anti-political, dogmatic undercurrents in contemporary feminism. I analyze contemporary and second wave feminist writings to reveal three, anti-political uses of "consciousness-raising" common to both eras. I recover a fourth usage—revolutionary c…

  • Susan Moller Okin, Justice, Gender, and the Family

Michaele Ferguson, Michaele L Ferguson•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Classics…•2019

Susan Okin’s radical thesis in Justice, Gender, and the Family is that the ideal of the gender-structured family is source of persistent gender inequality in politics, the workplace, and actual families. However, the book has widely been taken to be making a much narrower claim: that theorists of justice should extend their analysis to the family, ensuring that the division of labor in the family is just. As a result of this misreading, feminist …

  • Neoliberal feminism as political ideology

    Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2017•Citada por: 11

The emerging literature on neoliberal feminism appears to signal the revitalization of the study of feminist ideologies, suspended since the mid-1980s. However, it is argued here that scholars tend to conceptualize neoliberal feminism in a way that inhibits ideological analysis, as exemplified in Nancy Fraser's Fortunes of Feminism. They take classifications of feminist political ideologies from the 1980s as representative of the only true femini…

The central thesis of Susan Okin's Justice, Gender, and the Family —that the ideology of the traditional family is the linchpin of contemporary gender inequality in the US—remains significant more than a quarter‐century after the book's publication. On a political register, Okin's insistence on structural analysis of gender inequality is an important corrective to recent mainstream feminist emphasis on individual women's choices. On an academic r…

  • Choice Feminism and the Fear of Politics

    Open Access•Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2010•Citada por: 51•Referencias: 5

Choice feminism is motivated by a fear of politics. It arises in response to three common criticisms of feminism: that feminism is too radical, too exclusionary, and too judgmental. In response, choice feminism offers a worldview that does not challenge the status quo, that promises to include all women regardless of their choices, and that abstains from judgment altogether. Moreover, it enables feminists to sidestep the difficulties of making th…

  • Sharing without Knowing

    Open Access•Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2007•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

Many feminist and democratic theorists share the presumption that politics requires a pregiven subject (“women” or “the people”) whose identity is grounded in commonality. Drawing on Linda Zerilli's interventions in feminist debates, Ferguson develops an alternative account of collective identity that emerges instead from multiple, overlapping, and discontinuous social practices. This reconceptualization of identity demands a corresponding reconc…

  • W” Stands for Women

    Michaele L Ferguson•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2005•Citada por: 33•Referencias: 10

Feminist criticisms of the Bush Administration distinguish its feminized security rhetoric, which claims to support women's rights in Iraq and Afghanistan, from its actions at home and abroad, which undermine hard-won gains for women. This distinction between words and deeds obscures, on the one hand, the tremendous progress that feminists have made in framing women's rights as an issue that ought to be taken seriously and, on the other hand, the…
