Women and Gender in Postwar Europe
Displacing Blame
This article analyzes the views of Georgians, focusing primarily on those displaced from Abkhazia, and examines who they blame for the Georgia–Abkhazia conflict and what they think about Abkhazians. How groups assign blame affects the potential for reconciliation. Very different justifications are offered by those affected by conflict. These discourses of legitimation help to explain the conflict, and provide a narrative for the hostilities/war. …
Traumatic masculinities
Over 200,000 people became internally displaced after several violent conflicts in the early 1990s in Georgia. For many internally displaced persons (IDPs), gender relations have been transformed significantly. This translates to many women taking on the role of breadwinner for their family, which often is accompanied by the process of demasculinization for men. Where and When is Home? The Double Displacement of Georgian IDPs from Abkhazia
Studies on the displaced have begun to examine the critical role of place and home. We seek to illustrate how Georgian IDPs from Abkhazia conceptualize home. Georgian IDPs are experiencing what we term a ‘double displacement’, spatially and temporally. This article argues that foreign assistance, as an external force, has played an important role in shaping the local democracy-building process in Poland. The local context, which is omitted from the transition debate, is considered, and the influence that U.S. public donors exercised at the local scale is highlighted.
