Risk factors for persistent fatal opioid-involved overdose clusters in Massachusetts 2011–2021
Conducting spatially robust analyses may help inform policies to identify community-level risks for opioid-involved overdose deaths sooner than depending on raw incidence rates alone. The results can help inform policy makers and planners about locations of persistent risk
Just Smart or Just and Smart Cities? Assessing the Literature on Housing and Information and Communication Technology
Housing issues, including affordability, instability, and the search for available units, present ongoing challenges for urban inhabitants. Supporters claim information and communication technology (ICT) can solve housing problems through increased efficiency, transparency, and the creation of smart cities. However, little is known about the actual use and application of ICT data on housing issues. This article reviews and assesses recent empiric…

Are They Well Situated? Spatial Analysis of Privately Owned Public Space, Manhattan, New York City
In this article, we attempt to examine how privately owned public spaces through incentive zoning have played out as a means to generate public spaces, as part of improving spatial equity in Manhattan, New York City. Using spatial statistical analyses, we find that the inclusion of privately owned public spaces reduces overall average distance to the nearest public space from both working and living population, and helps to balance the distributi…
Is open space a magnet for business? A spatial analysis of New York
In this paper, we investigate the spatial patterns of 22 types of industries in New York with respect to open space of four types – Central Park, waterfront, and passive and active inland open spaces – to compare industries’ preferences to, and their actual accessibility to, open space. As a preference indicator, we use logit regression to estimate the degree to which the occurrence of the business cluster may be attributed to open space. Also as…
Linking land use and transportation in a rapidly urbanizing context
Travel behavior of low-income residents
Quantifying Spatial Characteristics of Cities
Land-use initiatives represent a potentially effective tool for coping with the kinds of mobility pattern that North American cities faced in the 1990s and still face in the present century. As fine-grained data about land use and travel activity become available, they provide the opportunity to improve our understanding of the linkage between land use and transport. This paper examines in detail the neighbourhood characteristics that could affec…
