  • After the Virus

    Open Access•Richard I Miller, Katrina Liu•ARTICLE•Education and Urban Society•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 38

The 2020 COVID-19 disaster triggered an educational crisis in the United States, deeply exacerbating the inequities present in education as schools went online. This primary impact may not be the only one, however: literature describes a secondary impact of such disasters through “disaster capitalism,” in which the private sector captures the public resources of disaster-struck communities for profit. In response to these warnings, we ask how sch…

  • Critical thinking for transformative praxis in teacher education

Richard I Miller, Katrina Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2023•Referencias: 2

The notion and practice of critical thinking (CT) has moved from its speculative formation by John Dewey to a standard element in teacher education curricula and standards. In the process, CT has narrowed its focus to the analysis and articulation of logical thought, and lost transformative value. In this paper, we examine the conception and implementation of CT in three teacher education domains primarily in the United States–music, media and in…

  • Critical Counter-Narrative as Transformative Methodology for Educational Equity

Open Access•Richard I Miller, Richard Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Research in Education•2020

Counter-narrative has recently emerged in education research as a promising tool to stimulate educational equity in our increasingly diverse schools and communities. Grounded in critical race theory and approaches to discourse study including narrative inquiry, life history, and autoethnography, counter-narratives have found a home in multicultural education, culturally sensitive pedagogy, and other approaches to teaching for diversity. This chap…

  • Critical reflection as a framework for transformative learning in teacher education

    Katrina Liu•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2015

This paper presents a framework for critical reflection that teacher educators can employ to analyze prospective teachers’ reflection and support their transformative learning. The author argues that teacher educators should not only pay attention to the cognitive processes of prospective teachers (how they reflect), but also the content of their thinking (what they reflect on), the goals of their thinking (why they reflect), and how their thinki…

  • Mantle of the Expert

Edric C Johnson, Katrina Liu et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Studies•2015

This article introduces the social studies field to Dorothy Heatchote's Mantle of Expert (MOE). MOE is a dramatic inquiry approach used in several subject areas and can work at all levels in the social studies curriculum. The authors go into the development of using this approach in an elementary and middle teacher education program. After sharing their modeling approach with preservice teachers in an elementary social studies methods course, the…

Children who are ethnic minorities, low income and live in urban neighborhoods are at higher risk for obesity. This study examined the feasibility and efficacy of a primary care-based and community partnered obesity intervention in Chinese American children. An experimental design with a historical comparison group was used to explore the feasibility of an obesity intervention for overweight Chinese American children, ages 7-12. Data were collect…
