  • The Provenance of Silver in the Viking‐Age Hoard From Bedale, North Yorkshire

Open Access•Jane Kershaw, Stephen Merkel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Referencias: 13

The acquisition of silver was a key motive propelling the Viking expansion out of Scandinavia; identifying the sources of Viking silver during the early part of the Viking Age can provide critical insights into the relative significance of western European and eastern, Islamic wealth in the Viking expansion. Here, we present new lead isotope and trace element analyses of silver ingots and rings contained in the late ninth‐ /early tenth‐century ho…

  • Sequential multi-isotope sampling through a Bos taurus tooth from Stonehenge, to assess comparative sources and incorporation times of strontium and lead

    Open Access•Jane Evans, J Marilyn Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

  • Tracking Roman lead sources using lead isotope analysis. A case study from the imperial rural estate at Vagnari (Puglia, Italy)

Open Access•Maureen Carroll, Jane Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021

  • A multi-isotope (C, N, O, Sr, Pb) study of Iron Age and Roman period skeletons from east Edinburgh, Scotland exploring the relationship between decapitation burials and geographical origins

    Open Access•Joanna Moore, Alice K Rose et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 19

Recent excavations at Musselburgh, East Lothian (Scotland) revealed twelve skeletons, radiocarbon dated to the Iron Age and Roman period. The high incidence of skeletal trauma characteristic of decapitation in those of Roman date makes this site unusual. A multi-isotope investigation of seven of these individuals was conducted to explore any link between intrusive burial practices and migration at one of Britain’s most northerly frontiers. Bulk c…

  • Lead Isotope Analysis of Tooth Enamel from a Viking Age Mass Grave in Southern Britain and the Constraints it Places on the Origin of the Individuals

    Open Access•J A Evans, Jane Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 29

Lead analysis of tooth enamel from individuals recovered from a Viking Age burial pit in southern England provides further evidence for their childhood origins outside Britain. All except one of the men have very low Pb concentrations that exclude anthropogenic Pb exposure. Strontium and oxygen isotope compositions identify a core group of men who have Pb isotope compositions of 208 Pb/ 206 Pb = 2.065 ± 0.021 ( n = 20, 2SD) that, when compared wi…

  • An Iron Age burial with weapons, on a site with evidence of medieval and post-medieval occupation from Dunbar, East Lothian

Open Access•Mike Roy, Fraser Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2016•Citada por: 1

In September and October 2005, an archaeological excavation was undertaken on the site of the former Empire Cinema on Dunbar High Street. In addition to late medieval and post-medieval remains, a cist grave of pre-Roman or Roman Iron Age date was excavated and recorded. Two adult males occupied the cist grave, one of whom was equipped with a sword and a spear, representing a rare example of an Iron Age burial with weapons in Scotland. Partial ske…

  • The Metallurgy of Roman Silver Coinage

Open Access•Kevin Butcher, Matthew Ponting et al.•BOOK•Metallurgy of Roman Silver Coinage•2015

The fineness of Roman imperial and provincial coinage has been regarded as an indicator of the broader fiscal health of the Roman Empire, with the apparent gradual decline of the silver content being treated as evidence for worsening deficits and the contraction of the supply of natural resources from which the coins were made. This book explores the composition of Roman silver coinage of the first century AD, re-examining traditional interpretat…

  • The oxygen isotope relationship between the phosphate and structural carbonate fractions of human bioapatite

Open Access•Carolyn Chenery, Carolyn A Chenery et al.•ARTICLE•Rapid Communications in Mass…•2012

RATIONALE: Oxygen isotope analysis of archaeological human dental enamel is widely used as a proxy for the drinking water composition (δ(18)O(DW)) of the individual and thus can be used as an indicator of their childhood place of origin. In this paper we demonstrate the robustness of structural carbonate oxygen isotope values (δ(18)O(C)) in bioapatite to preserve the life signal of human tooth enamel by comparing it with phosphate oxygen isotope …

  • Fingerprinting of Roman Mints Using Laser‐ablation Mc–icp–ms Lead Isotope Analysis

    Open Access•Matthew Ponting, J A Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2003•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 3

In this paper we present data to demonstrate the applicability of laser‐ablation MC–ICP–MS isotope analysis to archaeological artefacts, in this case Roman silver coins. The technique requires no chemical preparation, does minimal damage to the sample and yields external reproducibility that is better than conventional TIMS analysis; 207 Pb/ 206 Pb =±0.015% 2σ in comparison with 207 Pb/ 206 Pb =±0.04% 2σ, respectively. We show that Pb isotope com…
