Open Access•Piotr Makowski, Maciej Kałaska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025

Wide spectrum of cream wares from mid-8th to 11th centuries expands ’ware’ concept. • Cream wares exhibit regional diversity in terms of compositional characteristics. • Multiple workshops produced cream wares within a single ’signature style’. • Significant compositional and technological differences exist between main sub-categories of Islamic Cream Ware. The ceramic repertoire of Jordan, as well as that of the wider Bilad al-Sham, underwent si…

    Open Access•Piotr Makowski, J Chyla•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2024

This dataset constitutes a comprehensive inventory of 125 excavated sites from the territory of southern Bilad al-Sham attesting the occurrence of the Islamic Cream Ware (ICW). It provides information on the typological variety, dating, and general contexts of appearance of this pottery class. In addition, it is supplemented by bibliographical references to all sites included in the database. In general, the following dataset can appear useful fo…

  • The Rise of Early Plain and Painted Handmade Wares in the Southern Transjordan (10th-12th Centuries)

    Piotr Makowski•ARTICLE•Bulletin d'études orientales•2023

Excavations by a French-Jordanian team in the area of a significant sacred complex surrounded by a small village in Dharih (southern Jordan) yielded a fair number of handmade coarse ceramics. The main part of this assemblage was related to several makeshift structures established high above the Nabataean to Early Islamic remains. The chrono-typological analysis of both pottery and glass finds supported by the interpretation of relative stratigrap…

  • Towards a Better Understanding of the Chronological and Geographical Distribution Patterns of Plain and Painted Handmade Wares in Bilād al-Shām

Piotr Makowski•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Society…•2023

Though it has now been more than 90 years since the phenomenon of plain and painted handmade wares first became apparent to field archaeologists working at historical sites in the territory of Bilād al-Shām, so far relatively little effort has been made to explain it sufficiently. The current paper provides an introductory survey of the available literature and attempts to organize the overall discussion regarding the patterns of their chronologi…

  • The Sidon’s/Ṣaydā Northern Hinterland during the Early Byzantine–Early Islamic Transition

Mariusz Gwiazda, Joanna Piątkowska-Małecka et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2021

The paper focuses on the archaeological evidence for settlement, cultural, and economic change in the Sidon’s (Ṣaydā) northern hinterland in the period of transition from early Byzantine to early Islamic times (7th–8th century c.e.). The changes were reconstructed based on the outcome of archaeological research at the sites of Porphyreon (modern Jiyeh) and Chhîm in the Sidon’s/Ṣaydā economic hinterland. The evidence confirms a continuity, althoug…

  • A Preliminary Report on Polish–Lebanese Excavations at the St. George’s (Mar Girgis) Church in Rachkida (Northern Lebanon)

    Piotr Makowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Archaeology•2020

The article discusses the results of limited fieldwork carried out in 2012 at the St. George’s (Mar Girgis) church near the village of Rachkida, about 9 km northeast of Batroun. The church, which was probably built by a local Christian community like other villages in the region, was founded on remains from the Byzantine period. As far as could be ascertained, the main body of the building is a three-aisled basilica extended to include a porch on…

  • Agro-pastoral productions and landscape evolution during Antiquity and Islamic periods (AD 1st–12th centuries) at Dharih (Jordan)

Charlène Bouchaud, Hervé Monchot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Archaeology•2018

Dharih is a rural site located in the Jordanian higlands and occupied mainly from the 1st to the 12th centuries AD, which correspond to Nabataeo-Roman, Byzantine-Umayyad and Middle Islamic I periods. The Jordanian-French excavations revealed substantial amount of plant macro-remains, charcoal and animal bones material. Their study give new insights regarding the agro-pastoral productions and landscape evolution. Results show the existence of agro…

  • In search of Nubian master-builders

    Open Access•Piotr Makowski, Vincent W J Van Gerven Oei•ARTICLE•Polish Archaeology in the…•2017

A makeshift drawing from the Cathedral in Faras may be a depiction of the ground plan of a church. Nevertheless, the naive appearance of the sketch and an almost complete lack of sufficient parallels from either Nubia or the Eastern Mediterranean make a proper examination of this assumption unfeasible. A reassessment of the architectural drawing from the cathedral, however, draws a wider perspective for a discussion of originality in Nubian archi…

  • Preliminary report on the 2012 and 2013 excavation seasons at Jiyeh (Porphyreon)

Open Access•Tomasz Waliszewski, Magdalena Antos et al.•ARTICLE•Polish Archaeology in the…•2016

Archeological work in the 2012 and 2013 seasons in Jiyeh (Porphyreon), which lies on the Phoenician coast north of ancient Sidon, was focused on reconstructing the history of settlement on the site. At least three phases were identified and dated to the Iron Age II, the Persian– Hellenistic–Roman period and late antiquity. The early dating of the functioning of the Christian basilica to the 4th–5th century AD was also confirmed in trial pits. The…
