  • The frequency of childhood gender-nonconforming behavior in a nationally representative sample

Natalie M Gallagher, Zoë Mermin et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2026

1,213 parents; 55% female; weighted to match U.S. census benchmarks for age, sex at birth, race/ethnicity, region, education, and income). Parents identified 1.3% of children as a gender different from their sex assigned at birth. Of cisgender children, 73.4% showed at least some gender nonconformity in at least one domain (activities, clothing, friendships, or identity). Regular gender nonconformity was much less common: 9.6% of cisgender youth …

  • The relationship between identity-based social support, victimization, and mental health among LGBTQ+ youth

Open Access•Zoë Mermin, Natalie M Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Sexual Orientation…•2026

Previous work has demonstrated the importance of social support and the deleterious effects of peer victimization on mental health among lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) youth. However, most studies on social support, victimization, and mental health have focused on samples with few trans youth and have examined general social support, rather than identity-based social support. In this study, w…

  • Evaluating the reliability of a revised two-step assessment of sex and gender in adolescents and adults

Megan J Heise, Christopher McGhee et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025•Referencias: 4

This study assessed the reliability of an updated two-step measure of gender and sex. Gender diverse youths ( n = 610, Mean age = 15 years, SD = 2) and their parents ( n = 606, M age = 48, SD = 5) completed a measure of sex and gender twice with a time delay of 30-60 minutes. Reliability was high, with 95% or higher agreement for sex and gender for both parents and youths. Reliability was highest for parents and for cisgender and transgender boys…

  • Gender categorization and memory in transgender and cisgender people

  • Analogical mapping across sensory modalities and evidence for a general analogy factor

    Open Access•Adam B Weinberger, Natalie M Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2022

  • The Pandemic and the “Perpetual Foreigner

    Open Access•Jordan S Daley, Natalie M Gallagher et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2022•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 13

We examined the "othering" of Asian Americans in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given past evidence that pathogen-related threat perceptions can exacerbate intergroup biases, as well as salient public narratives blaming the Chinese for the pandemic, we assessed whether individuals experiencing a greater sense of threat during the pandemic were more likely to apply the "perpetual foreigner" stereotype to Asian Americans. Over a seven-week p…

  • Gender essentialism and the mental representation of transgender women and men

    Open Access•Natalie M Gallagher, Galen V Bodenhausen•ARTICLE•Cognition•2021

  • The Role of Network Structure and Initial Group Norm Distributions in Norm Conflict

Open Access•Julian Kohne, Natalie M Gallagher et al.•CHAPTER•Computational Conflict Research•2020

Social norms can facilitate societal coexistence in groups by providing an implicitly shared set of expectations and behavioral guidelines. However, different social groups can hold different norms, and lacking an overarching normative consensus can lead to conflict within and between groups. In this chapter, we present an agent-based model that simulates the adoption of norms in two interacting groups. We explore this phenomenon while varying re…

  • Exposure to Common Enemies can Increase Political Polarization

Eaman Jahani, Natalie M Gallagher et al.•PREPRINT•2020

Longstanding theory indicates the threat of a common enemy can mitigate conflict between members of rival groups. We tested this hypothesis in a pre-registered experiment where 1,670 Republicans and Democrats in the United States were asked to complete a collaborative online task with an automated agent or “bot” that was labelled as a member of the opposing party. Prior to this task, we exposed respondents to primes about a) a common enemy (invol…
