  • The Influences of Political Affiliation and Weather-Related Impacts on Climate Change Adaptation in U.S. Cities

Open Access•Rachel M Gurney, Sisi Meng et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2022

This study examines the influences of state and local political affiliation and local exposure to weather-related impacts on local government climate change adaptation efforts in 88 U.S. cities. Although climate adaptation takes place when cities replace critical infrastructure damaged by severe weather events, little is known about the influence of political affiliation and severe weather events on climate adaptation in a broader sense. Using mu…

  • Role of green roofs in reducing heat stress in vulnerable urban communities—a multidisciplinary approach

Open Access•Ashish Sharma, Sierra Woodruff et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Green infrastructure, such as green roofs, is increasingly being used to reduce 'heat stresses' associated with urban heat island effects. This article discusses strategies to identify vulnerable neighborhoods in the City of Chicago, where green roofs could achieve multiple goals to mitigate urban heat-related challenges. Numerical simulations were performed using the urbanized version of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting mod…

  • Green and cool roofs to mitigate urban heat island effects in the Chicago metropolitan area

Open Access•Ashish Sharma, Patrick Conry et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The effects of urban heat islands (UHIs) have a substantial bearing on the sustainability of cities and environs. This paper examines the efficacy of green and cool roofs as potential UHI mitigation strategies to make cities more resilient against UHI. We have employed the urbanized version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (uWRF) model at high (1 km) resolution with physically-based rooftop parameterization schemes (conventional, green and…
