Scaling up phytolith preparation protocols for big data
Analytical procedures in phytolith analysis are transforming with the potential of AI to automate phytolith identification and classification, facilitating the analysis of unprecedented large datasets. Currently, phytolith extraction protocols are inadequate for processing the large numbers of samples it is becoming possible to analyse. Digital microscope scanners make it possible digitise phytolith slides at a high resolution with minimal human …
From margins to mainstream
The Polychrome Expansion marks the widespread dispersal of an emblematic ceramic style across much of Amazonia during a period of broad social transformation. Yet the timing and constituent routes for this dispersal are poorly understood, in part due to a lack of dating at many sites. Here, the authors apply computational methods to model the expansion via existing radiocarbon dates, critically examining issues of timing, travel and trade/conflic…
Modelling Maize Agriculture by the Pre-Columbian Casarabe Culture of Amazonian Bolivia
Scholars have long debated the extent to which pre-Columbian (pre-1492 CE) indigenous cultures modified and 'domesticated' the landscapes of Greater Amazonia.Compelling evidence to support large-scale pre-Columbian landscape modification can be found in the forest-savanna mosaic environments of northern Bolivia, where the Casarabe Culture constructed hundreds of earthen settlement mounds, integrated by a vast causeway-canal network.Operating betw…
Localised land-use and maize agriculture by the pre-Columbian Casarabe Culture in Lowland Bolivia
Multiple pre-Columbian (pre-1492 CE) archaeological sites now challenge the traditional portrayal of Amazonia as a ‘pristine wilderness’. This is especially true within the forest-savanna mosaic landscapes of lowland Bolivia, where the pre-Columbian Casarabe Culture constructed hundreds of settlement mounds, integrated with a dense causeway-canal network – one of the most complex, stratified societies yet discovered in Amazonia. Excavations at pr…
Archaeology and ethnography demonstrate a human origin for Amazonian Dark Earths
Archaeological research provides clear evidence that the widespread formation of Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) in tropical lowland South America was concentrated in the Late Holocene, an outcome of sharp demographic growth that peaked towards 1000 BP. In their recent paper, however, Silva et al. propose that the high fertility of ADE is not of anthropic origin but instead the result of alluvial deposition starting in the Middle Holocene (8200-4200…
Landscape changes in the southern Amazonian foreland basin during the Holocene inferred from Lake Ginebra, Beni, Bolivia
Our study is located in northern Beni and aims to improve knowledge on regional landscape changes from the last 8600 years, based on pollen and charcoal analyses from a lacustrine sediment core from Lake Ginebra. Our results showed that gallery forest and lacustrine sediment were observed from 8645 until 3360 cal yr BP. After a change from a lacustrine to a swamp environment at 1700 cal yr BP, the Cerrados and the Mauritia swamp became installed …
Early Holocene crop cultivation and landscape modification in Amazonia
Design of pre-Columbian raised fields in the Llanos de Moxos, Bolivian Amazon
High-altitude adaptation and late Pleistocene foraging in the Bolivian Andes
Linking soil properties and pre-Columbian agricultural strategies in the Bolivian lowlands
Quantitative morphometric analysis of lakes using GIS
Quantitative measures of polygon shapes and orientation are important elements of geospatial analysis. These kinds of measures are particularly valuable in the case of lakes, where shape and orientation patterns can help identifying the geomorphological agents behind lake formation and evolution. However, the lack of built-in tools in commercial geographic information system (GIS) software packages designed for this kind of analysis has meant tha…
Human–environment interactions in pre-Columbian Amazonia
Eco-archaeological regions in the Bolivian Amazon
The discovery of extensive pre-Columbian earthworks in north-eastern Bolivia has been seen as evidence that Amazonia was once densely populated by complex societies. This has led some scholars to believe that culture evolved in Amazonia regardless of environmental constraints. However, this view does not take the diversity of earthworks and geo-ecological regions into account, nor their uneven distribution. This paper offers an initial explanatio…
Human occupation and environmental change in south-western Amazonia during the Holocene
Mid- to late-Holocene fluvial activity behind pre-Columbian social complexity in the southwestern Amazon basin
The scale, spatial variability and implications of pre-Columbian human-induced changes in the Amazon basin are controversial. While some scholars believe that large settlements and complex societies were limited to areas with favourable environmental conditions and human disturbance was localized, others propose that social complexity developed regardless of environmental constraints and opportunities and that human disturbance was widespread. In…
