  • Ideological content and institutional frameworks: Unionist identities in Northern Ireland and Scotland

    C Farrington, Graham Walker•ARTICLE•Irish Studies Review•2009•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 32

This article examines the complex interactions between British national identity and the territorial identities of Northern Ireland and Scotland. We argue that the current literature on national identities in Britain misunderstands the nature of British identities in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Indeed, much of this literature wrongly defines Unionists in both of these areas. By examining the content of British national identity, a comparison o…

  • Models of Civil Society and Their Implications for the Northern Ireland Peace Process

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Global Change, Civil Society and…•2008

In the search for an explanation of a negotiated settlement to an apparently intractable ethnic conflict, several authors looked beyond the political elites in Northern Ireland. They argued that, as the political elites had not changed (in either personnel or ideas) over the course of about 20 years, we must look to other social and political actors and other structural changes in order to explain the successful conclusion of the negotiations in …

  • Mobilisation, State Crisis and Counter‐Mobilisation: Ulster Unionist Politics and the Outbreak of the Troubles

    C Farrington•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2008•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 25

This article examines the role of Unionist politics in the outbreak of the Troubles. It seeks to advance the current debate on how and why the Troubles broke out by examining the interactions between the role of the state, the internal politics of Unionism, and the role of Unionist political elites in the developing crisis. It argues that these interactions should be understood from a comparative perspective, which allows for a greater appreciati…

  • Reconciliation or Irredentism? The Irish Government and the Sunningdale Communiqué of 1973

    Open Access•C Farrington•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2007•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 4

This article uses recently released archival material to examine the role of the Irish government in the negotiation of the Sunningdale communiqué of 1973, which marked, among other things, an agreement to establish a Council of Ireland and was therefore a key part of the first attempt to establish a power-sharing devolved executive in Northern Ireland. The article will problematise the distinctions which have been made between various strains of…

  • Unionism in Local Government

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

Chapters 1 and 2 have taken a holistic approach to Unionism and has looked for and identified common strands within Unionism relating to ideas and political and strategic analysis. When differences have taken on an institutional character, insofar as they have been reflected in political parties, these have been noted, such as the differences between the culture of debate in the UUP and the DUP. This chapter begins to explore these institutional …

  • The Challenge of the Anglo-Irish Agreement and the Unionist Response

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

If new political ideas were important in providing an impetus for political change within Unionism in the 1990s, how did these changes interact with political developments at an inter-governmental level? The AIA provided arguably the greatest challenge to Unionists since the Third Home Rule crisis. Their analysis and response is key to understanding the evolution of Unionism to the Belfast Agreement of Good Friday 1998. It has been seen as an imp…

  • Unionism and the Peace Process

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

So far we have seen how the parameters of the relationship between Unionism and the peace process were established and developed. New ideas provided an impetus for political change and the AIA was important in framing strategic objectives for Unionists, while simultaneously creating a disjuncture between British Government policy and Unionist interests. At the same time, relationships between Unionists and Nationalists at a local level were chang…

  • The Development of Unionist Ideas

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

Political ideas have been a central place for debate in Ireland except that, unlike in the rest of Europe, these debates have been over the nature and extent of the ‘nation’ and the boundaries of the ‘national community’. In many ways these debates are not exceptional but they do open a window into analysing how the differing political groups perceive and explain their national identity and their relationship with their respective state. They exp…

  • Conclusion: Questions of Unity

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

The Northern Ireland peace process has been a long and protracted affair and has involved addressing complicated and antagonistic relationships between parties which have spent many years demonising each other (Dixon, 2001a). For most of this process, Unionists have been seen as the reluctant participants. Unlike most claims in Northern Ireland, there is no Unionist counter-claim to Gerry Adams’ statement that ‘the IRA started this process’ or th…

  • Unionism and the Politics of the Agreement

    Open Access•C Farrington•CHAPTER•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006

The story of the conclusion of the negotiations which led to the Belfast Agreement of Good Friday 1998 is well known (Hennessey, 2000; Mallie and McKittrick, 2001; Godson, 2004), as are the structures which it established (O'Leary, 1999) and their weaknesses (Horowitz, 2001; Taylor, 2001). The divisions within Unionism over the Agreement did not seem to have been taken seriously by the two Governments or by Nationalists and Republicans. Neverthel…

  • Unionism and the Peace Process in Northern Ireland

    Open Access•C Farrington•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2006•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 16

This article will provide a framework for analysing unionist responses and reactions to the Northern Irish peace process. It identifies four responses to the Belfast Agreement that have reflected unionist divisions over the peace process: a principled yes position, a pragmatic yes, a pragmatic no and a principled no. However, these positions hide a common interpretation of the process in general and this interpretation is outlined. The article th…

  • Ulster Unionism and the Peace Process in Northern Ireland

    Open Access•C Farrington•BOOK•Ulster Unionism and the Peace…•2006•Citada por: 32

The politics of Ulster Unionism is central to the success or failure of any political settlement in Northern Ireland. This book examines the relationship between Ulster Unionism and the peace process

  • Alternative Ulster? Political Parties and the Non-Constitutional Policy Space in Northern Ireland

    Open Access•Karin Gilland Lutz, C Farrington•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2006•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 43

This article uses data from a survey of the candidates in the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly election to measure the policy positions of the Northern Irish political parties on scales that are the usual measurements of party policy in Western Europe, such as on economic and social issues, the European Union, morality issues, environmental issues and minority groups. These data were then used to test whether the Northern Ireland party system was c…
