Digitalization as a resource in social enterprise performance during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic substantially accelerated digitalization processes across organizations, yet the role of digital technologies in social enterprises remains theoretically underexplored. This article examines how digitalization functions as a strategic resource in social enterprises operating under conditions of resource scarcity and institutional hybridity. Drawing on resource dependence theory, institutional logics theory, and stakeholder t…
Public procurement scandals and trust in government during Covid-19
Purpose On average, 14% of GDP is allocated through public procurement, which was also a key tool for purchasing health equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. These procurements were the subjects of malpractice. Most visible malpractices have led to public scandals and have been widely covered by the media. Therefore, our exploratory study focuses on how scandals in public procurement environments during pandemics can affect trust in government.…
Cross‐sectoral collaboration in times of crisis
The Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland, with their shared political histories, have confronted the compounded challenges of the COVID‐19 pandemic and the Ukraine war. These difficulties spurred the emergence of public–nonprofit collaboration in all three countries, each taking distinct paths. Our study aims to unravel these divergent trajectories of public–nonprofit collaboration through the lens of historical institutionalism. Using this lens,…
Civil Society Versus Local Self‐Governments and Central Government in V4 Countries
In the new EU member states, there are very few studies analyzing the role of central and local self-governments in co-design processes. Nevertheless, such studies are particularly important as co-creation takes place in the context of former post-communist countries where central power reigned supreme and cooperation with the civil sector was very limited. This article aims to enrich the existing debate on the role of central and local self-gove…
Values Do Matter
Anti-democratic governments are wary of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) owing to the latter’s important role in ensuring that the government acts according to public interest. Unfortunately, some governments are trying to hinder the functions of NGOs, creating an unfavorable image for them and causing a lack of trust. Despite their poor financial condition and strong dependence on state aid, Polish NGOs play their democratic role by support…
What affects employment by NGOs? Counteraction to precarious employment in the Polish non-profit sector in the perspective of Covid-19 pandemic crises
Research background: The precarious employment in non-governmental organizations has not been the subject of thorough scientific considerations so far. Meanwhile, the dominance of flexible forms of employment in an organization evokes a sense of instability, insecurity and uncertainty among employees. It weakens the relationship between staff and the organization, which, by not providing employees with prospects for permanent employment, creates …
Social Enterprises’ Hybridity in the Concept of Institutional Logics
Social enterprises have gained wide recognition as a tool for solving social and environmental problems. They generate new opportunities in the social sphere, while being active in the commercial field. They are hybrid organizations that face many challenges when pursuing frequently conflicting goals. Social enterprises are therefore an expression of the possibility of different institutional logics coexisting as part of the same organization. So…
Becoming business-like
Research background: NGOs face an increasing expectation to be more business-like. They are becoming involved in selling services by performing a commercial activity, which, in turn, is a basic condition for creating social enterprises. The changes related to this approach are an essential condition for their survival and a significant reason for developing their new form as social enterprises. On the other hand, there is no lack of critical opin…
